Before their sinking began, they started to appear not at the right and left of the sun where the Lord is, but remote from this, so that they were in the distance, because the Lord had removed Himself from them. They then said among themselves that their ruin was imminent, because if they were not near the Lord, they could not exercise control in His place and inspire in those around them the illusory belief that it was the Lord ruling.

They then said to each other that their destruction was at hand; for if they were not near the Lord, they could not rule in His place and cast abroad the phantasy concerning the Lord's ruling.

Antequam subsidentia illorum fiebat, coeperunt non apparere ad dextram et sinistram solis, ubi Dominus, sed apparebant remoti abinde, sic ut distarent, ex causa quia Dominus se removit ab illis, tunc dixerunt inter se, quod eorum pernicies instet; nam si non prope Dominum, non potuerunt loco ejus dominari, et circumcirca injicere phantasiam de Domino imperante.
