True Christianity #158 (Rose, 2010)

158. A Supplement

Since the Holy Spirit is the subject of this chapter, it is very worthwhile to point out that nowhere in the Word of the Old Testament is the Holy Spirit mentioned. The "spirit of holiness" occurs in three passages, once in David (Psalms 51:11), and twice in Isaiah (Isaiah 63:10-11). The Holy Spirit is of course frequently mentioned in the Word of the New Testament, both in the Gospels and in the Acts of the Apostles and their Epistles. The reason for this is that the Holy Spirit first came into existence when the Lord had come into the world. The Holy Spirit emanates from him on behalf of the Father. The Lord alone is holy (Revelation 15:4). This is why the angel Gabriel mentioned to Mother Mary "the Holy One that will be born from you" (Luke 1:35).

Now, it says, "The Holy Spirit was not yet in existence, because Jesus was not glorified yet" (John 7:39), and yet before that it says that the Holy Spirit filled Elizabeth (Luke 1:41) and Zechariah (Luke 1:67), and also Simeon (Luke 2:25). The reason for this is that the spirit of Jehovah the Father filled them, and this is called "the Holy Spirit" because of the Lord, who was already in the world.

This is why no passage in the Word of the Old Testament says that the prophets spoke on behalf of the Holy Spirit; they spoke on behalf of Jehovah. It constantly says Jehovah spoke to me, the word of Jehovah came to me, Jehovah said, says Jehovah. So that no one will doubt the truth of this, I want to list the references in Jeremiah alone where these expressions occur:

Jeremiah 1:4, 7, , 19; , 9, 19, 22, 29, 31; 3:1, 6, 10, 12, 14, 16; 4:1, 3, 9, 17, 27; 5:11, 14, 18, 22, 29; 6:6, 9, 12, 15-16, 21-22; 7:1, 3, 11, 13, 19-21; 8:1, 3, 12-13; 9:3, 7, 9, 13, 15, 17, 22, 24-25; 10:1-2, 18; 11:1, 6, 9, 11, 17-18, 21-22; 12:14, 17; 13:1, 6, 9, , 25; 14:1, 10, 14-15; 15:1-3, 6, 11, 19-20; 16:1, 3, 5, 9, 14, 16; 17:5, 15, 19-21, 24; 18:1, 5-6, 11, 13; 19:1, 3, 6, 12, 15; 20:4; 21:1, 4, 7-8, 11-12; 22:2, 5-6, 11, 18, 24, 29-30; 23:2, 5, 7, 12, 15, 24, 29, 31, 38; 24:3, 5, 8; 25:1, 3, 7-9, 15, 27-29, 32; 26:1-2, 18; 27:1-2, 4, 8, 11, 16, 19, 21-22; 28:2, 12, 14, 16; 29:4, 8-9, 16, 19-21, 25, 30-32; , 8, 10-12, 17-18; 31:1-2, 7, 10, 15-17, 23, 27-28, ; 32:1, 6, 14-15, 25-26, 28, 30, 36, 42; 33:1-2, 4, 10, 12-13, 17, 19-20, 23, 25; 34:1-2, 4, 8, 12-13, 17, 22; 35:1, 13, 17-19; 36:1, 6, 27, 29-30; 37:6-7, 9; 38:2-3, 17; ; 40:1; 42:7, 9, 15, 18-19; 43:8, 10; 44:1-2, 7, 11, 24-26, 30; 45:2, 5; 46:1, 23, 25, 28; 47:2; 48:1, 8, 12, 30, 35, 38, 40, 43-44, 47; 49:2, 5-7, 12-13, 16, 18, 26, 28, 30, 32, 35, 37-39; 50:1, 4, 10, 18, 20-21, 30-31, 33, 35, 40; 51:25, 33, 36, 39, 52, 58.

These are just the passages in Jeremiah. It says the same thing in all the other prophets. It does not say that the Holy Spirit spoke; and it does not say that Jehovah spoke to them through the Holy Spirit.

158. ADDITIONAL NOTE

Since this chapter has dealt with the Holy Spirit, it is of importance to note that the Holy Spirit is nowhere named in the Old Testament Word, but only 'the Spirit of holiness' in three passages, one in the Psalms of David (Psalms 51:11), and two in Isaiah (Isaiah 63:10-11). But there are frequent references in the New Testament Word, as much in the Gospels as in the Acts of the Apostles and in their Epistles. The reason is that the Holy Spirit first existed when the Lord came into the world, for it came out of Him from the Father; for 'the Lord alone is holy' (Revelation 15:4). For this reason too the angel Gabriel speaking to Mary the mother of Jesus said 'the holy thing which will be born of you' (Luke 1:35). The reason why we read 'The Holy Spirit was not yet, because Jesus was not yet glorified' (John 7:39), although it was said earlier that the Holy Spirit filled Elizabeth (Luke 1:41) and Zechariah (Luke 1:67), as well as Simeon (Luke 2:25), was that it was the spirit of Jehovah the Father which filled them; and it was called the Holy Spirit because the Lord was already at that time in the world.

This is why nowhere in the Old Testament Word does it say that the Prophets spoke from the Holy Spirit, but from Jehovah. For everywhere we read 'Jehovah spoke to me', 'The Word from Jehovah came to me', 'Jehovah said', 'The saying of Jehovah.'

To remove all possibility of doubt I propose to quote the passages solely in Jeremiah where these expressions occur:

51:25, 33, 36, 39, 52, 58.

These are solely from Jeremiah. There are similar expressions in all the other Prophets, but it is never said that the Holy Spirit spoke, nor that Jehovah spoke to them by means of the Holy Spirit.

158. COROLLARY.

As this chapter treats of the Holy Spirit, it is worthy of special notice that in the Word of the Old Testament the Holy Spirit is nowhere mentioned, and the "Spirit of Holiness" in three places only, once in David (Psalms 51:11); and twice in Isaiah 63:10-11). But in the Word of the New Testament, both in the Gospels and in the Acts of the Apostles, as also in their Epistles it is mentioned frequently. This is because the Holy Spirit first was, when the Lord had come into the world; for it goes forth out of Him from the Father; for:

The Lord alone is Holy (Apocalypse 15:4)

therefore also the angel Gabriel said to Mary the mother:

The holy thing that shall be born of thee (Luke 1:35).

It is said:

The Holy Spirit was not yet, because Jesus was not yet glorified (John 7:39)

although it is previously declared that the Holy Spirit filled Elizabeth (Luke 1:41), and Zacharias (Luke 1:67), as also Simeon (Luke 2:25); this is because the Spirit of Jehovah the Father filled them, which was called the Holy Spirit because of the Lord who was already in the world. This is why nowhere in the Word of the Old Testament is it said that the prophets spoke from the Holy Spirit, but from Jehovah; for everywhere we read, "Jehovah spoke unto me," "The Word of Jehovah came unto me," "Jehovah said," "Thus said Jehovah." That no one may be in doubt about this I will refer to the passages in Jeremiah alone, where these expressions occur:Jeremiah 1:4, 1:7, 1:11-14, 1:19; 2:1-5, 2:9, 2:19, 2:22, 2:29, 2:31; 3:1, 3:6, 3:10, 3:12, 3:14, 3:16, 4:1, 4:34:9, 4:17, 4:27; 5:11, 5:14, 5:18, 5:22, 5:29; 6:6, 6:9, 6:12, 6:15-16, 6:21-22; 7:1, 7:3, 7:11, 7:13, 7:19-21; 8:1, 8:3, 8:12-13; 9:3, 9:7, 9:9, 9:13, 9:15, 9:17, 9:22, 9:24-25; 10:1-2, 10:18; 11:1, 11:3, 11:6, 11:9, 11:11, 11:17-18, 11:21-22; 12:14, 12:17; 13:1, 13:6, 13:9, 13:11-15, 13:25; 14:1, 14:10, 14:14-15; 15:1-3, 15:6, 15:1115:19-20; 16:1, 16:3, 16:5, 16:9, 16:14, 16:16; 17:5, 17:19-21, 17:24; 18:1, 18:5-6, 18:11, 18:13; 19:1, 19:3, 19:6, 19:12, 19:15; 20:4; 21:1, 21:4, 21:7-8, 21:11-12, 21:14; 22:2, 22:5-6, 22:11, 22:16, 22:18, 22:24, 22:29-30; 23:2, 23:5, 23:7, 23:12, 23:15, 23:24, 23:29, 23:31, 23:38, 24:3, 24:5, 24:8; 25:1, 25:3, 25:7-9, 25:15, 25:27-29, 25:32; 26:1-2, 26:18; 27:1-2, 27:4, 27:8, 27:11, 27:16, 27:19, 27:21-22; 28:2, 28:12, 28:14, 28:16; 29:4, 29:8-9, 29:16, 29:19-21, 29:25, 29:30-32; 30:1-5, 30:8, 30:10-12, 30:17-18; 31:1-2, 31:7, 31:10, 31:15-17, 31:23, 31:27-28, 31:31-38; 32:1, 32:6, 32:14-15, 32:25-26, 32:28, 32:30, 32:36, 32:42, 32:44; 33:1-2, 33:4 , 33:10-13, 33:17, 33:19-20, 33:23, 33:25; 34:1-2, 34:4, 34:8, 34:12-13, 34:17, 34:22; 35:1, 35:13, 35:17-19; 36:1, 36:6, 36:27, 36:29-30; 37:6-7, 37:9; 38:2-3, 38:17, 39:15-18; 40:1; 42:7, 42:9, 42:15, 42:18-19; 43:8, 43:10; 44:1-2, 44:7, 44:11, 44:24-26, 44:30; 45:2, 45:5; 46:1, 46:23, 46:25, 46:28; 47:1; 48:1, 48:8, 48:12, 48:30, 48:35, 48:38, 48:40, 48:43-44, 48:47; 49:2, 49:5-7, 42:12-13, 49:16, 49:18, 49:26, 49:28, 49:30, 49:32, 49:35, 49:37-39; 50:1, 50:4, 50:10, 50:18, 50:20-21, 50:30-31, 50:33, 50:35, 50:40; 51:25, 51:33, 51:36, 51:39, 51:52, 51:58.

The same expressions occur in all the other prophets, but nowhere is it said that the Holy Spirit spoke to them, or that Jehovah spoke to them through the Holy Spirit.

158. COROLLARY.

Since this chapter has treated of the Holy Spirit, it deserves to be specially noticed that in the Word of the Old Testament no mention is made of the Holy Spirit, but only of the Spirit of holiness (A.V., Holy Spirit), in three places, once in David, Psalms 2:11 and twice in Isaiah 63:10-11. In the Word of the New Testament, however, both in the Evangelists and in the Acts of the Apostles, as well as in their Epistles, it is mentioned frequently. The reason is because the Holy Spirit existed for the first time when the Lord came into the world, for it proceeds out of Him from the Father;

for the Lord only is Holy, Revelation 15:4.

Therefore it is also said by the angel Gabriel to the mother Mary:

"That holy thing which shall be born of thee" Luke 1:35.

It is written:

"The Holy Spirit (A.V., Holy Ghost) was not yet; because that Jesus was not yet glorified" John 7:39;

and yet it is said before this that the Holy Spirit filled Elizabeth, Luke 1:41; and Zechariah, Luke 1:67; and also Simeon, Luke 2:25. This was because they were filled with the Spirit of Jehovah the Father, which was called the Holy Spirit, on account of the Lord who was already in the world. This is also the reason why it is nowhere stated in the Word of the Old Testament that the Prophets spoke from the Holy Spirit, but from Jehovah; for it is everywhere said, "Jehovah spoke to me," "The Word of Jehovah came to me," "Jehovah said," "The saying of Jehovah." That no one may have any doubt upon the matter, I will quote only from Jeremiah, where these expressions occur:

1:4, 7, 11-14, 19; 2:1-5, 9, 19, 22, 29, 31; 3:1, 6, 10, 12, 14, 16; 4:1, 3, 9, 17, 27; 5:11, 14, 18, 22, 29; 6:6, 9, 12, 15-16, 21-22; 7:1, 3, 11, 13, 19-21; 8:1, 3, 12-13; 9:3, 7, 9, 13, 15, 17, 22, 24-25; 10:1-2, 18; 11:1, 6, 9, 11, 21-22; 12:14, 17; 13:1, 6, 9, 11-15, 25; 14:1, 10, 14-15; 15:1-3, 6, 11, 19-20; 16:1, 3, 5, 9, 14, 16; 17:5, 19-21, 24; 18:1, 5-6, 11, 13; 19:1, 3, 6, 12, 15; 20:4; 21:4, 7-8, 11-12; 22:2, 5, 8, 11, (16), 18, 24, 29-30; 23:2, 5, 7, 12, 15, 24, 29, 31, 38; 24:3, 5, 8; 25:1, 3, 7-9, 15, 27-29, 32; 26:1-2, 18; 27:1-2, 4, 8, 11, 16, 19, 21-22; 28:2, 12, 14, 16; 29:4, 8-9, 16, 19-21, 25, 30-32; 30:1-5, 8, 10-12, 17-18; 31:1-2, 7, 10, 15-17, 23, 27-28, 31-38; 32:1, 6, 14-15, 25-26, 28, 30, 36, 42, (44); 1-2, 4, 10, (11), 12-13, 17, 19-20, 23, 25; 34:1-2, 4, 8, 12-13, 17, 22; 35:1, 13, 17-19; 36:1, 6, 27, 29-30; 37:6-7, 9; 38:2-3, 17; 39:15-18; 40:1; 42:7, 9, 15, 18-19; 43:8, 10; 44:1-2, 7, 11, 24-26, 30; 45:1-2, 5; 46:1, 23, 25, 28; 47:1; 48:1, 8, 12, 30, 35, 38, 40, 43-44, 47; 49:2, 5-7, 12-13, 16, 18, 26, 28, 30, 32, 35, 37-39; 50:1, 4, 10, 18, 20-21, 30-31, 33, 35, 40; 51:25, 33, 36, 39, 52, 58.

These passages are in Jeremiah alone. It is similarly recorded in all the other Prophets, and not that the Holy Spirit spoke, nor that Jehovah spoke to them by the Holy Spirit.

158. COROLLARIUM.
