51. In the Word, "justice" is associated with love and "judgment" with wisdom. For this reason I will present some passages to the effect that God governs the world with these two qualities.
Jehovah, justice and judgment are the support of your throne. (Psalms 89:14)
Those who wish to glory should glory in this, that Jehovah creates judgment and justice on earth. (Jeremiah 9:24)
Jehovah should be exalted because he filled the earth with judgment and justice. (Isaiah 33:5)
Judgment will flow like water and justice like a mighty stream. (Amos 5:24)
Jehovah, your justice is like the mountains of God; your judgments are like a great deep. (Psalms 36:6)
Jehovah will bring out his justice like a light, and [his] judgment like noonday. (Psalms 37:6)
Jehovah will judge his people in justice and his poor ones in judgment. (Psalms 72:2)
When I learn the judgments of your justice, seven times a day I praise you for the judgments of your justice. (Psalms 119:7, 164)
I will betroth myself to you in justice and judgment. (Hosea 2:19)
Zion will be redeemed with justice, and its returned exiles with judgment. (Isaiah 1:27)
He will sit on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it with judgment and justice. (Isaiah 9:7)
I will raise up for David a righteous offshoot who will reign as king and execute judgment and justice on earth. (Jeremiah 23:5; 33:15)
Elsewhere we read that we ought to practice justice and judgment, as in Isaiah 1:21; 5:16; 58:2; Jeremiah 4:2; 22:3, 13, 15; Ezekiel 18:5; 33:14, 16, 19; Amos 6:12; Micah 7:9; Deuteronomy 33:21; and John 16:8, 10-11.
51. In the Word righteousness is used with reference to love and judgment to wisdom, so some passages will be quoted to show that these two are the means by which God exercises control in the world.
Jehovah, righteousness and judgment are the foundation of your throne, Psalms 89:14.
Let him who boasts boast of this, that Jehovah executes judgment and righteousness upon the earth, Jeremiah 9:24.
Let Jehovah be exalted, because He has filled Zion 1 with judgment and righteousness, Isaiah 33:5.
Let judgment flow like water, and righteousness like a mighty torrent, Amos 5:24.
Jehovah, your righteousness is like the mountains of God, your judgments a mighty abyss, Psalms 36:6.
Jehovah will make his 2 righteousness shine as the light, and his 3 judgment like noonday, Psalms 37:6.
Jehovah will judge his' people in righteousness and his' suffering ones in judgment, Psalms 72:2.
When I have learnt the judgments of your righteousness, seven times a day I praise you for the judgments of your righteousness, Psalms 119:7, 164.
I will betroth myself to you 4 in righteousness and judgment, Hosea 2:19. Zion shall be redeemed in righteousness, and her converts in judgment, Isaiah 1:27.
He shall sit upon the throne of David, and reign over his kingdom, to establish it in judgment and righteousness, Isaiah 9:7.
I will raise up for David a righteous shoot, who shall reign as king and execute judgment and righteousness upon the earth, Jeremiah 23:5; 33:15.
Elsewhere it is said that righteousness and judgment ought to be done: as Isaiah 1:21; 5:16; 58:2; Jeremiah 4:2; 22:3, 13, 15; Ezekiel 18:5; 33:14, 16, 19; Amos 6:12; Micah 7:9; Deuteronomy 33:21; John 16:8, 10-11.
Footnotes:
1. The Latin text has 'the earth', but this is changed in the author's copy in keeping with the Hebrew.
2. The author's own copy has this changed to 'your' in keeping with the Hebrew; cf. Arcana Caelestia 1458.
3. The author's own copy has this changed to 'your' in keeping with the Hebrew.
4. At Arcana Caelestia 9182 this passage is translated 'I will betroth you to myself' in keeping with the Hebrew.
51. Since in the Word justice [or righteousness] is predicated of love, and judgment of wisdom, I will cite some passages to show that it is by means of these two that God's government is carried on in the world:
Righteousness and judgment are the support of Thy Throne (Psalms 89:14).
Let him that glorieth glory in this, that Jehovah doeth judgment and righteousness in the earth (Jeremiah 9:24).
Let Jehovah be exalted, for He hath filled the land [Hebrew, Zion] with judgment and righteousness (Isaiah 33:5).
Judgment shall flow as water, and righteousness as a mighty stream (Amos 5:24).
O Jehovah, Thy righteousness is like the mountains of God Thy judgments are a great deep (Psalms 36:6).
Jehovah shall bring forth thy righteousness as the light, and thy judgment as the noonday (Psalms 37:6).
Jehovah shall judge thy people with righteousness, and thy poor with judgment (Psalms 72:2).
When I shall have learned the judgments of Thy righteousness seven times a day do I praise Thee because of the judgments of Thy righteousness (Psalms 119:7, 164).
I will betroth Me unto thee [Hebrew, thee unto Me] in righteousness and in judgment (Hosea 2:19).
Zion shall be redeemed in judgment and those that are brought back in righteousness (Isaiah 1:27).
He shall sit upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to establish it in judgment and in righteousness (Isaiah 9:7).
I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and He shall reign as King, and shall do judgment and righteousness in the land (Jeremiah 23:5).
Elsewhere it is said that judgment and righteousness ought to be done, as in Isaiah 1:21; 5:16; 58:2; Jeremiah 4:2; 22:3, 13, 15; Ezekiel 18:5; 33:14, 16, 19; Amos 6:12; Micah 7:9; Deuteronomy 33:21; John 16:8, 10, 11).
51. Since justice in the Word is predicated of love, and judgment of wisdom, the following passages are adduced to show that the government of God in the world is maintained by means of these two:
"Justice and judgment are the support. (A. V., habitation) of Thy throne" Psalms 89:14.
"Let him that glorieth glory in this,... (that I am the Lord) which exercise... judgment and righteousness in the earth" Jeremiah 9:24.
"JEHOVAH is exalted...for He hath filled the earth (A.V., Zion) with judgment and righteousness" Isaiah 33:6.
"Let judgment run down as waters, and righteousness as a mighty stream" Amos 5:24.
"Thy righteousness is like the great mountains; Thy judgments are a great deep" Psalms 36:6.
"He shall bring forth His (A.V., thy) righteousness as the light, and Thy judgment as the noon-day" Psalms 37:6.
"He shall judge His (A.V., thy) people with righteousness, and His (A.V., thy) poor with judgment" Psalms 72:2.
"When I shall have learned Thy righteous judgments... Seven times a day do I praise Thee because of Thy righteous judgments" Psalms 119:7, 164.
"I will betroth me unto Thee (A.V., thee unto me) in righteousness and in judgment" Hosea 2:19.
"Zion shall be redeemed with judgment, and her converts with righteousness" Isaiah 1:27.
"Upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom,... to establish it with judgment and with justice" Isaiah 9:7.
"I will raise unto David a righteous branch, and a king shall reign... and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth" Jeremiah 23:5; 33:15.
In other places it is said that men ought to do justice and judgment, as in Isaiah 1:21; 5:16; 58:2; Jeremiah 4:2; 22:3, 13, 15; Ezekiel 8:5; 33:14, 16, 19; Amos 6:12; Micah 7:9; Deuteronomy 33:21; John 16:8, 10-11.
JEHOVAH, JUSTITIA TUA sicut montes Dei, JUDICIA TUA abyssus magna, Psalm 36:7. 5 JEHOVAH educet sicut lucem JUSTITIAM tuam, 6 et JUDICIUM sicut meridiem, Psalm 37:6. JEHOVAH judicabit populum suum in JUSTITIA, et miseros suos in Judicio, 7 Psalm 72:2. Cum didicero JUDICIA JUSTITIAE tuae, septies in die laudo Te super JUDICIIS JUSTITIAE tuae, Psalmes 119:7, 164. Desponsabo Me tibi 8 in JUSTITIA et JUDICIO, Hoschea 2:19.
