2325. And Lot saw. That this signifies the conscience, namely, of those who are in the good of charity but in external worship, may be seen from the signification of to "see." To "see," in the Word, signifies to understand (n. 897, 1584, 1806, 1807, 2150); but in the internal sense it signifies to have faith, of which signification we shall speak, of the Lord's Divine mercy, when we come to the 32nd verse of chapter 29. That to "see" here signifies conscience, is because those who have faith also have conscience. Faith is inseparable from conscience, so inseparable indeed that whether you say faith or conscience it is the same. By faith is meant the faith by means of which there is charity, and which is from charity, thus charity itself; for faith without charity is no faith; and as faith is not possible without charity, so neither is conscience.
Elliott(1983-1999) 2325
2325. 'And Lot saw' means [their] conscience - that is to say, the conscience of those with whom the good of charity exists but whose worship is external. This becomes clear from the meaning of 'seeing'. 'Seeing' in the Word means understanding, see 897, 1584, 1806, 1807, 2150. In the internal sense however 'seeing' means having faith, a meaning which will in the Lord's Divine mercy be discussed at Gen 29: 32. The reason why conscience is meant here is that people who have faith have conscience as well. Conscience is inseparable from faith, so inseparable in fact that it makes no difference whether you speak of faith or of conscience. By faith is meant faith through which charity comes, and which derives from charity. This being so, it is charity itself, for faith without charity is not faith at all. And just as faith is not possible without charity, neither is conscience possible without it.
Latin(1748-1756) 2325
2325. `Et vidit Lot': quod significet conscientiam, nempe eorum qui in bono charitatis sunt at in cultu externo, constare potest a significatione `videre'; `videre' in Verbo significat intelligere, videatur n. 897, 1584, 1806, 1807, 2150; in sensu autem interno significat fidem habere, de qua ejus significatione, ex Divina Domini Misericordia, ad vers. 32 {1}, xxix Gen. dicetur. @1 This verse refers to Reuben. In n. 3861, 3862, 3863 S. states that Reuben is named from `he saw.'$
