[NCE]787. The symbolism of the flood as the false ideas that still swamped the people of that church also follows from earlier statements [660], because a flood or deluge simply means a flood, or deluge, of falsity.
Above, in verse 6 [739], a flood of water symbolized trials, as shown there, and that flood was also an inundation of falsity — the falsity that evil spirits stir up in us during our trials. A similar flood is meant here, but not in the context of our trials. Accordingly the present verse mentions only a flood, not a flood of water.

Potts(1905-1910) 787

787. That by the "flood" are signified falsities which still inundated the church, also follows from what was shown above; for a "flood" or "inundation" is nothing else than an inundation of falsities. Before (at verse 6), the "flood of waters" signified temptation, as was there shown; which also is an inundation of falsities that evil spirits then excite in man. The case is the same here, but without temptation, and therefore it is said here simply the "flood" not the "flood of waters."

Elliott(1983-1999) 787

787. 'The flood' means the falsities which continued to inundate the Church. This too follows on from what has been pointed out above, for the flood or deluge was nothing else than a flood of falsities. Previously, in verse 6 'a flood of waters' meant temptation, as was shown at that point, and that deluge also is one of falsities which evil spirits at that time activate with man. The present verse refers to something similar, but temptation is not involved. Hence simply 'a flood' is mentioned and not a flood of waters.
