Potts(1905-1910) 9017

9017. Verses 16, 17. And he that stealeth a man, and selleth him, and if he shall be found in his hand, dying he shall die. And he that curseth his father and his mother, dying he shall die. "And he that stealeth a man, and selleth him," signifies the application of the truth of faith to evil, and alienation; "and he shall be found in his hand," signifies nevertheless the acknowledgment of it; "dying he shall die," signifies damnation; "and he that curseth his father and his mother," signifies the denial in every possible way of the Lord and of His kingdom by those who are of the church, and thus profanation of the good and truth of the church; "dying he shall die," signifies damnation.

Elliott(1983-1999) 9017

9017. Verses 16, 17 And anyone stealing a man and selling him - and he is found in his hand - shall surely die. And anyone cursing his father and his mother shall surely die.

'And anyone stealing a man and selling him' means applying the truth of faith to evil, and alienating it 'And he is found in his hand' means though there is still an acknowledgement of it. 'Shall surely die' means damnation. 'And anyone cursing his father and his mother' means complete rejection of the Lord and of His kingdom by those belonging to the Church, and so profanation of the Church's goodness and truth. 'Shall surely die' means damnation.

Latin(1748-1756) 9017

9017. {1} Vers. 16, 17.
