Apocalypse Explained (Tansley translation 1923) 1101

1101. Verse 3. Because of the wine of the anger of her whoredom all nations have drunk, and the kings of the earth have committed whoredom with her, and the merchants of the earth have waxed rich through the power of her delicacies.

"Because of the wine of the anger of her whoredom all nations have drunk," signifies the adulteration of all things of the good of heaven and the church by dreadful falsities of evil. "And the kings of the earth have committed whoredom with her," signifies the falsification of all things belonging to the truth of heaven and of the church. "And the merchants of the earth have waxed rich through the power of her delicacies," signifies instruction in those things pertaining to heaven and the church, which derive their desirableness and delight from the love of ruling by the holy things of the church as means, and also from the love of possessing the world in the same way.

1101. Verse 3. For all nations have drunk of the wine of her whoredom, and the kings of the earth have committed whoredom with her, and the merchants of the earth have become rich from the abundance of her luxuries.

3. "For all nations have drunk of the wine of the anger of her whoredom," signifies the adulteration of all things of the good of heaven and of the church by direful falsities of evil (n. 1102); "and the kings of the earth have committed whoredom with her," signifies the falsification of all things of the truth of heaven and the church (n. 1103); "and the merchants of the earth have become rich from the abundance of her luxuries," signifies instruction in those things of heaven and the church, which draw their delightfulness and desirableness from the love of having dominion by the holy things of the church as means, and also from the love of possessing the world by the same means (n. 1104).

"Quia ex vino [irae] scortationis ejus biberunt omnes gentes, et reges terras cum illa scortati sunt, et mercatores terrae ex facultatibus deliciarum ejus ditati sunt."

3. "Quia ex vino irae scortationis ejus biberunt omnes gentes", significat adulterationem omnium boni caeli et ecclesiae per dira falsa mali [n. 1102] ; "et reges terrae cum illa scortati sunt", significat falsificationem omnium veri caeli et ecclesiae (n. 1103] ; "et mercatores terrae ex facultatibus deliciarum ejus ditati sunt", significat instructionem in illis quae caeli et ecclesiae sunt, quae ex amore dominandi per sancta ecclesiae ut media, et quoque ex amore possidendi mundum per eadem, trahunt quod jucunda sint et cupiantur [n. 1104] .
