Apocalypse Explained (Tansley translation 1923) 1132

1132. Verse 10. Standing afar off for fear of her torment, saying, Woe, woe, that great city Babylon, that strong city! for in one hour is thy judgment come.

"Standing afar off for fear of her torment," signifies while they are in externals from dread of infernal punishments; "saying, Woe, woe, that great city Babylon," signifies lamentation over that doctrine, and over that religion; "that strong city," signifies which had fortified itself by so many wicked artifices; "for in one hour is thy judgment come," signifies their total destruction by the Last Judgment.

1132. Verse 10. Standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Woe, woe, that great city Babylon, that mighty city, for in one hour is thy judgment come.

10. "Standing afar off for the fear of her torment," signifies when they are in externals from a dread of infernal punishment (n. 1133); "saying, Woe, woe, that great city Babylon," signifies lamentation over that doctrine and over that religion (n. 1134); "that mighty city" signifies which had fortified itself by so many wicked devices (n. 1135); "for in one hour is thy judgment come" signifies their total destruction through the Last Judgment (n. 1136).

"E longinquo stantes propter timorem cruciatus ejus, dicentes, Vae, vae, urbs illa magna Babylon, urbs illa valida, quia in una hora venit judicium tuum."

"E longinquo stantes propter timorem cruciatus ejus", significat dum in externis sunt ex formidine poenarum infernalium [n. 1133] ; "dicentes, Vae, vae, urbs illa magna Babylon", significat lamentationem super doctrinam et super religiosum [n. 1134] ; urbs illa valida", significat quae tot nefandis artibus se muniverat [n. 1135] ; "quia in una hora venit judicium tuum", significat exitium eorum totale per ultimum judicium [n. 1136] .
