Apocalypse Explained (Tansley translation 1923) 818

818. Verse 12. And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose death-stroke was healed.

"And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him," signifies, the connection of reasonings from the natural man with the sense of the letter of the Word, whereby the religion of faith separate is strengthened; "and he causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast," signifies, whence those who in the church are in falsities and evils therefrom, acknowledge the agreement thereof in heart; "whose death-stroke was healed," signifies, and so the disagreement removed by contrived conjunctions of works with faith.

818. Verse 12. And all the authority of the first beast he exerciseth before him; and he maketh the earth and them that dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose stroke of death was healed.

12. "And all the authority of the first beast he exerciseth before him," signifies the connection of the reasonings from the natural man with the sense of the letter of the Word, by which the religion of faith separate is strengthened n. 819; "and he maketh the earth and them that dwell therein to worship the first beast," signifies in consequence of which those in the church who are in falsities and in evils therefrom in heart acknowledge the agreement n. 821; "whose stroke of death was healed," signifies and thus the discordance was removed by devised conjunctions of works with faith n. 822.

"Et potestatem prioris bestiae omnem facit coram illo: et facit ut terra et habitantes in illa adorent bestiam priorem, cujus sanata est plaga mortis ejus."

12. "Et potestatem prioris bestiae omnem facit coram illo", significat connexionem ratiociniorum c naturali homine cum sensu litterae Verbi, per quam corroboratur religio fidei separatae [n. 819] ; "et facit ut terra et habitantes in ea adorent bestiam priorem", significat unde illi qui in ecclesia in falsis et inde malis sunt, agnoscunt corde concordantiam [n. 821] ; "cujus sanata est plaga mortis", significat et sic submotam discordantiam per inventas conjunctiones operum cum fide [n. 822] .
