646. 14:16 So He who sat on the cloud thrust in His sickle on the earth, and the earth was reaped. This symbolizes the end of the church, because it no longer had any Divine truth in it.
This is the symbolic meaning, because He who sat on the cloud symbolizes the Lord in relation to the Word (no. 642). To thrust in the sickle and reap means, symbolically, to put an end to something and execute judgment (no. 643). The harvest symbolizes the state of the church, here its last state (nos. 643, 645). And the earth symbolizes the church (no. 285).
When these symbolic meanings are combined into one, it is apparent from them that "He who sat on the cloud thrust in His sickle on the earth and the earth was reaped" symbolizes the end of the church, because it no longer had any Divine truth in it.
646. [verse 16] 'And the One sitting upon the cloud put forth His sickle, and the land was reaped' signifies the end of the Church because Divine Truth is not there any longer. These things are signified because by 'the One sitting upon the cloud' is signified the Lord as to the Word (642); by 'to put forth the sickle and reap' is signified to make an end and execute judgment (643); by 'the harvest' is signified the state of the Church, here its last state (643, 645); and by 'the land' is signified the Church (285). Resulting from these things joined together into one sense it is plain that by 'the One sitting upon the cloud put forth the sickle, and the land was reaped' is signified the end of the Church because Divine Truth is not there any longer.
646. Verse 16. And He that sat on the cloud sent His sickle, and the earth was reaped, signifies the end of the church, because there was no longer any Divine truth therein. This is signified, because by "Him that sat on the cloud" is signified the Lord as to the Word, (642). By "sending the sickle and reaping" is signified to make an end and execute judgment, (643). By "harvest" is signified the state of the church, here its last state, (643, 645); and by "the earth" is signified the church, (285). From these connected into one sense, it appears, that by "Him who sat on the cloud sending His sickle, and the earth being reaped" is signified the end of the church, because there is no longer any Divine truth therein.
646. (Vers 16.)
