  764.“因她心里说,我坐着作皇后,并不是寡妇,决不会看见悲哀”表他们拥有这些事物,因为出于内心对统治的欢喜雀悦,以及心智对财富的得意忘形,他们对自己将永远拥有统治权,必能自我保护,永无可能丧失这些事物充满信任和信心。“她心里说”表示出于内心对统治的欢喜雀悦而充满自信,出于心智对财富的得意忘形而信心满满。“我坐着作皇后”表示他们将拥有统治权,在此是指永远拥有,因为接下来经上说“决不会看见悲哀”。“并不是寡妇”表示他们会自我保护。“寡妇”表示缺乏保护的人,因为没有男人。经上之所以说“皇后”和“寡妇”,而不说“国王”和“男人”,是因为所指的是作为教会的巴比伦。“我决不会看见悲哀”表示他们决不会丧失这两样东西。他们死后会拥有由此产生的悲哀(参看763节)。

  在以赛亚书,几乎一样的话论及巴比伦:

  你不再称为列国的主母;你心里说,我必永为主母。你心中说,惟有我,还有谁能像我;我必不坐着作寡妇,也不知道丧子之事;哪知,丧子、寡居这两件事在一日之间必临到你。正在你多行邪术、广施符咒的时候,这两件事必全然临到你身上。你素来倚仗自己的恶行说,无人看见我;你的智慧使你偏邪,并且你心里说,惟有我,还有谁能像我;因此,毁灭也必突然临到你身。(以赛亚书 47:578-11

  在圣言中,“寡妇”表示缺乏保护的人,因为“寡妇”在灵义上表示处于良善,未处于真理的人。“男人”表示真理,他的“妻子”表示良善;因此,“寡妇”表示没有真理的良善,没有真理的良善缺乏保护;因为真理保护良善。圣言所提及的“寡妇”就表示这一点(如以赛亚书9:14-151710:1-2;耶利米书22:349:10-11;耶利米哀歌5:2-3;以西结书22:6-7;玛拉基书3:5;诗篇68:5146:7-9;出埃及记22:21-24;申命记10:1827:19;马太福音23:14;路加福音4:2520:37)。

764. "For she says in her heart, 'I sit as queen and am not a widow, and will not see grief.'" This symbolically means that this is the lot of those Roman Catholics, because owing to their elation of heart over their dominion, and exultation of spirit over their riches, they possess the confidence and conviction that they will dominate forever and defend themselves, and that they can never lose what they have.

To say in her heart means, symbolically, to possess confidence owing to their elation of heart over their dominion, and a conviction owing to their exultation of spirit over their riches. Her saying, "I sit as queen," means symbolically that they will have dominion, in this case forever, because the declaration follows, "I will not see grief." Her saying, "I am not a widow," means symbolically that they will defend themselves. A widow, being without a man, symbolizes someone without protection. The terms queen and widow are used, and not king or man, because the reference is to Babylon as the church. And her saying, "I will not see grief," means symbolically that they can never lose these two, dominion and riches. That from this arises their grief after death may be seen just above in no. 763.

[2] Almost the same statements are made of Babylon in Isaiah:

...you shall no longer be called The Lady of Kingdoms... You said (in your heart), "I shall be a lady forever," ...saying in your heart, "I am, and there is no one else besides me; I shall not sit as a widow, nor shall I know the loss of children." But these two things shall come to you... in one day: the loss of children, and widowhood. They shall come upon you... because of the multitude of your sorceries, and the great abundance of your enchantments. You have trusted in your wickedness. You have said, "No one sees me." Your wisdom... led you astray, when you have said in your heart, "I am, and there is no one else besides me." Therefore... devastation shall come upon you suddenly... (Isaiah 47:5, 7-11)

A widow in the Word means someone without protection, for in the spiritual sense a widow symbolizes someone who possesses goodness and no truth, for a man symbolizes truth, and his wife goodness. Thus a widow symbolizes goodness without truth, and goodness without truth lacks protection, for it is truth that protects goodness. A widow has this symbolism in the Word where one is mentioned, as in Isaiah 9:14-15, 17; 10:1-2; Malachi 3:5; Psalms 68:5; 146:7-9; Exodus 22:21-24; Deuteronomy 10:18; 27:19; Matthew 23:14; Luke 4:25; 20:47.

764. 'Because she says in her heart, I sit a queen and am not a widow, and shall not see mourning' signifies that they have these things because, as a result of the elation of heart over dominion, and the exultation of mind (animus) over riches, they are in a trust and confidence that they are going to have the dominion perpetually, and protect their own selves, and that they can never be deprived of these things. 'To say in her heart' signifies to be in [a state of] trust as a result of the elation of heart over dominion, also to be in confidence as a result of the exultation of mind (animus) over riches. 'I sit a queen' signifies that they are going to have dominion, perpetually here, because 'I shall not see mourning' follows. 'I am not a widow' signifies that they are going to protect their own selves; by 'a widow' is signified one who is without protection because without a man. It is said 'a queen' and 'a widow' and not 'a king' and a man because Babylon as a Church is understood. 'And I shall not see mourning' signifies that they cannot ever be deprived of those two things. That in consequence they have mourning after death may be seen just above (763).

[2] Things almost similar are said of Babel in Isaiah:

Thou shalt not add [that] they call thee a mistress of kingdoms; thou hast said in thy heart, I shall be mistress for ever, saying in thy heart, I and none such as I besides, I shall not sit a widow, nor shall I know bereavement. But these two things shall come unto thee in one day, bereavement and widowhood. They shall come upon thee for the multitude of thy sorceries and for the great abundance of thine enchantments. Thou hast trusted in wickedness; thou hast said, There is no one seeing me. Thy wisdom has led thee astray, when thou hast said in thy heart, I and none such as I besides; therefore devastation shall come upon thee suddenly. Isaiah 47:5, 8-11.

By 'a widow' in the Word is understood one who is without protection, for in the spiritual sense by 'a widow' is signified one who is in good and not in truth, for by 'a man' is signified truth and by his 'wife' good. Consequently by 'a widow' is signified good without truth, and good without truth is without protection, for truth protects good. 764. "Quia in corde suo dicit, Sedeo regina, et vidua non sum, et luctum non videbo," significat quod haec illis sint, quia ex cordis elatione super dominio et animi exultatione super divitiis, in fiducia et confidentia sunt quod perpetuo dominaturi sint, et semet ipsos tutaturi, et quod non possint illis usquam orbari.- "Dicere in corde suo" significat ex cordis elatione super dominio in fiducia esse, tum ex animi exultatione super divitiis in confidentia esse; "sedeo regina" significat quod dominaturi sint, hic perpetuo, quia sequitur "non videbo luctum:" "vidua non sum" significat quod semet ipsos tutaturi sint; per "viduam" significatur qui est absque tutela, quia absque viro; dicitur "regina" et "vidua," et non rex et vir, quia intelligitur Babylon ut Ecclesia: "et luctum non videbo" significat quod non illis duobus possint usquam orbari; quod inde illis luctus post mortem sit, videatur mox supra (763). Per "viduam" in Verbo intelligitur qui absque tutela est, nam in Sensu spirituali per "viduam" significatur qui in bono est et non in vero: per "virum" enim significatur verum, et per "uxorem" ejus bonum; inde per "viduam" significatur bonum absque vero, et bonum absque vero est absque tutela, verum enim tutatur bonum.
