Faith (Dole translation 2017) 14

14. To put it more clearly, a thing that is good must be of use, so the origin of caring is wanting to be of use; and since usefulness loves the means [of being of use], it prompts a desire for those means and leads to a recognition of them. So by the steps in this sequence, wanting to be of use takes visible form and becomes caring.

Doctrine of Faith (Rogers translation 2014) 14

14. To put it more clearly: Goodness is nothing else but useful endeavor. Charity in its first origin is consequently an affection for useful endeavor; and because useful endeavor loves the means, the affection produces an affection for the means, which leads to a knowledge of those means. And through this progression an affection for useful endeavor finds expression and becomes charity.

Doctrine of Faith (Rogers translation 1954) 14

14. But this will be set out more clearly. Good is nothing else than use; therefore charity in its first origin is the affection of use. And as use loves the means [necessary for its existence], the affection of use produces the affection of means, whence arises the knowledge of what they are. Through these in their series the affection of use manifests itself, and becomes charity.

Doctrine of Faith (Potts translation 1904) 14

14. More clearly: - Good is nothing but Use, so that in its very origin charity is the affection of use; and as use loves the means, the affection of use produces the affection of the means, and from this the knowledge [cognitio] of them, and through this progression the affection of use comes forth into manifest being [existit], and becomes charity.

Doctrina Novae Hierosolymae de Fide 14 (original Latin 1763)
