Faith (Dole translation 2017) 54

54. We can see from the following passages that circumcision represented purification from evils that are caused by strictly earthly love:

Circumcise your heart and take away the foreskin of your heart, so that my wrath will not break forth because of the ill will of your deeds. (Jeremiah 4:4)

Circumcise the foreskin of your heart and no longer stiffen your neck. (Deuteronomy 10:16)

To circumcise the heart or the foreskin of the heart is to purify ourselves from evils.

Conversely, then, being uncircumcised or having a foreskin refers to people who have not been purified from evils caused by strictly earthly love and who are therefore not devoted to caring, and since having a foreskin means being unclean at heart, it says that no one who is uncircumcised at heart or uncircumcised in the flesh is to enter the sanctuary (Ezekiel 44:9); that no uncircumcised person is to eat the Passover meal (Exodus 12:48); and that the uncircumcised are damned (Ezekiel 28:10; 31:18; 32:19).

Doctrine of Faith (Rogers translation 2014) 54

54. That circumcision represented purification from the evils that accompany a merely natural love is apparent from the following:

Circumcise (your heart) …and take away the foreskins of your heart…, lest My wrath go forth…, because of the evil of your doings. (Jeremiah 4:4)

Circumcise the foreskin of your heart, and be stiff-necked no longer. (Deuteronomy 10:16)

To circumcise the heart or the foreskin of the heart is to purify oneself of evils. Conversely, therefore, someone uncircumcised means someone not purified of the evils accompanying a merely natural love, thus someone lacking in charity. And because someone unclean of heart means someone uncircumcised, we are told,

(No one) uncircumcised in heart or uncircumcised in the flesh shall enter My sanctuary…. (Ezekiel 44:9)

No uncircumcised person shall eat (the Passover). (Exodus 12:48)

Also that such a one was damned (Ezekiel 28:10, 31:18, 32:19).

Doctrine of Faith (Rogers translation 1954) 54

54. That by circumcision is represented purification from the evils of purely natural love, is evident from these passages:

Circumcise your heart ... and take away the foreskins of your heart ... lest my fury come forth like fire ... because of the evil of your doings. Jeremiah 4:4.

Circumcise the foreskin of your heart, and be no more stiff-necked. Deuteronomy 10:16.

To circumcise the heart, or the foreskin of the heart, is to purify oneself from evils. Consequently, on the other hand, by one uncircumcised, or one with the foreskin, is meant one who is not purified from the evils of merely natural love, and therefore one who is not in charity; and because the unclean at heart are meant by the uncircumcised it is said:

No [stranger] uncircumcised in heart, and uncircumcised in flesh, shall enter into my sanctuary. Ezekiel 44:9;

No uncircumcised person shall eat of the passover. Exodus 12:48.

That such are damned. Ezekiel 28:10; Ezekiel 31:18; Ezekiel 32:19.

Doctrine of Faith (Potts translation 1904) 54

54. That circumcision represented purification from evils belonging to love merely natural, is evident from these passages:

Circumcise your heart, and take away the foreskins of your heart, lest Mine anger go forth because of the evil of your doings (Jeremiah 4:4).

Circumcise therefore the foreskin of your heart, and be no more stiffnecked (Deuteronomy 10:16).

To "circumcise the heart" or "the foreskin of the heart," is to purify one's self from evils. On the contrary therefore, one who is "uncircumcised" or "foreskinned" means one not purified from the evils of love merely natural, thus one who is not in charity. And as one who is unclean in heart is meant by "one uncircumcised" it is said:

No [son of a stranger] uncircumcised in heart, and uncircumcised in flesh, shall enter into My sanctuary (Ezekiel 44:9).

No uncircumcised person shall eat the passover (Exodus 12:48).

And that such a one is condemned (Ezekiel 28:10; Ezekiel 31:18; Ezekiel 32:19).

Doctrina Novae Hierosolymae de Fide 54 (original Latin 1763)

54. Quod per circumcisionem repraesentata sit purificatio a malis quae sunt amoris mere naturalis, patet ex his:-

"Circumcidite" cor vestrum, "et removete praeputia cordis vestri,... ne exeat... ira mea... propter malitiam operum vestrorum" (Jeremiam 4:4);

"Circumcidite praeputium cordis vestri, et cervicem vestram non indurate amplius" (Deuteronomium 10:16):

"circumcidere cor" aut "praeputium cordis" est purificare se a malis. Inde vicissim, per "incircumcisum " seu "praeputiatum" intelligitur qui a malis amoris mere naturalis non purificatus; ita qui non in charitate est: et quia immundus corde per "praeputiatum" intelligitur, dicitur

"Nullus praeputiatus corde, et praeputiatus carne, intrabit in sanctuarium" (Ezechiel 44:9);

"Nullus praeputiatus comedet Pascha" (Exodus 12:48).

Et quod damnatus sit (Ezechiel 28:10; 31:18; 32:19).
