Life109.一个属世的道德人在世人面前看上去可能像一个属灵人,但在天使面前则不然。在天上的天使面前,他若处于良善,就看似一个木头的形像,若处于真理,则看似一个大理石的形像,与属灵的道德人截然不同。因为一个属世的道德人是一个外在的道德人,一个属灵的道德人是一个内在的道德人;没有内在之物的外在之物毫无生命。诚然,这外在是活着的,但它没有被称为生命的生命,或说它没有名副其实的生命。
109. Moral earthly individuals can look just like moral spiritual individuals to people on earth, but not to angels in heaven. To angels in heaven they look like lifeless wooden statues if the individuals are focused on goodness, and like lifeless marble statues if they are focused on truth. It is different for moral spiritual individuals because a moral earthly person is moral on the outside, while a moral spiritual person is moral on the inside, and the outside has no life apart from the inside. Technically speaking, the outside is alive, of course, but it has no life worthy of the name.
109. A moral natural person may appear to people in the world no different from a moral spiritual person, but not in the eyes of angels in heaven. To angels in heaven he appears, if occupied with good, like a wooden statue, and if occupied with truths, like a marble statue, neither having any life. Not so a moral spiritual person. For a moral natural person is outwardly moral, while a moral spiritual person is inwardly moral, and an outward expression without an inner core lacks life. It does, indeed, have some life, but not the life that is properly called life.
109. It is possible for the moral natural man to appear before men in the world exactly like the moral spiritual man, but not before the angels in heaven. If the moral natural man is principled in what is good, he appears before the angels in heaven as an image of wood, and if he is principled in what is true, as an image of marble, in both of which there is no life. It is otherwise with the moral spiritual man; for the moral natural man is externally moral, and the moral spiritual man is internally moral; and the external without the internal is not alive: it lives indeed, but not the life which is called life.
109. Before men, a natural moral man may appear exactly like a spiritual moral man, but not before the angels. Before the angels in heaven, if he is in goods he appears like an image of wood, if in truths like an image of marble, lifeless, and very different from a spiritual moral man. For a natural moral man is an outwardly moral man, and a spiritual moral man is an inwardly moral man, and what is outward without what is inward is lifeless. It does indeed live, but not the life that is called life.
