150. Taking Credit
If we do what is good for the credit we may get, we are doing good not out of a love for doing good but out of a love for getting a reward, since if we are looking for credit we want something in return. When we do this we are focusing on pleasure and thinking it is to be found in receiving a reward rather than in doing some good. This means that we are not spiritual people but earthly ones.
150. Chapter 11. Taking Credit for Our Actions
When we do good things so that we can take credit for them, we are not doing them because we love to do good things, but because we love to be rewarded. When we take credit for the things we do, we want to be repaid — the reward is what we consider enjoyable, not the good things in themselves. This means we are not spiritually-minded, but materialistic.
150. XI. ON MERIT
Those who do good deeds to acquire merit are acting not out of love for good, but out of love for reward. Anyone who wants a reward wants to be repaid. Those who act thus look for pleasure and gain it in their reward, and not in good. They are therefore not spiritual, but natural.

THOSE who do goods with the view of obtaining merit, do not do them from the love of good, but from the love of reward; for he who is desirous of acquiring merit desires also to be rewarded; and those who do so, see their delight, and place it, in reward, and not in good; wherefore, they are not spiritual, but natural.
