The New Jerusalem and its Heavenly Teachings (New Century Edition 2020) 153

153. Genuine caring and genuine faith are completely devoid of any concern for credit because what makes caring for others pleasurable is the goodness itself and what makes faith pleasurable is the truth itself. So people who are committed to this kind of caring and faith know the nature of goodness without concern for credit, while people who are not committed to caring and faith do not.

The Heavenly City (Woofenden translation 1993) 153

153. When we have real kindness and real faith, we have no desire to take credit for what we do. The joy of kindness comes from goodness itself, and the joy of faith comes from truth itself. When we have this type of kindness and faith, we know what it is like to do good things without wanting to take credit for them. But we have no conception of this when we do not have kindness and faith.

The New Jerusalem and its Heavenly Doctrine (Chadwick translation 1990) 153

153. Genuine charity and genuine faith have no thought of reward, for the pleasure of charity is real good, and the pleasure of faith is real truth. As a result those who have that kind of charity and faith know what good is which seeks no reward; but those who do not have them do not.

The New Jerusalem and its Heavenly Doctrine (Tafel translation 1911) 153

153. Genuine charity and genuine faith are devoid of every idea of merit; for the delight of charity is good itself, and the delight of faith is truth itself: wherefore, those who are in such charity and faith, know what good void of the idea of merit is, but not those who are not in charity and faith.

The New Jerusalem and its Heavenly Doctrine (Whitehead translation 1892) 153

153. Genuine charity and genuine faith is without any merit, for good itself is the delight of charity, and truth itself is the delight of faith; wherefore they who are in that charity and faith know what good not meritorious is, but not they who are not in charity and faith.

De Nova Hierosolyma et ejus Doctrina Caelesti 153 (original Latin 1758)
