1467. About the chastening punishments of those who take up theories in regard to spiritual and heavenly matters,
and confirm them by reasoning
It is well known that some adopt specific propositions, hatched from their brain like infants, and because they love them, corroborate them in many ways and afterwards regard them as truths, even if they are falsities and others can see that they are theories. This occurs in regard to spiritual and heavenly matters as it does in other things.
1467. CONCERNING THE PUNISHMENTS OF VASTATION OF THOSE WHO ASSUME HYPOTHETICAL THEORIES IN REGARD TO SPIRITUAL AND CELESTIAL THINGS, AND CONFIRM THEM BY REASONINGS
It is well known that some men assume for themselves certain propositions hatched from their own brain, and because they love them as their offspring, they later confirm them by many things, and afterwards regard them as verities, although they are falsities. Others can see that they are hypotheses. It is the same in spiritual and celestial things as in other matters.
