Spiritual Experiences (Odhner and Nemitz translation 1998) 1634

1634. Of course, those who become wise from without are therefore acquainted with truths, whether from the Word of the Lord, or from the sciences by means of which they try to penetrate to the deeper knowledge of spiritual and heavenly matters. These are able to so well imitate what is genuine, that one who does not have saving faith may be utterly fooled. For the Lord reveals to one who has saving faith, in spiritual mental images and in an inexpressible manner, that a thing is true.

Spiritual Experiences (Buss translation 1902) 1634

1634. Nay, those who are of a quality to seek to be wise from external things, and thus to know truths, whether from the Word of the Lord, or from sciences, by which they would fain enter into the knowledges of spiritual and celestial things, these can so imitate what is genuine, that one who is not in saving faith is liable to be altogether deceived, for to one who is in such a faith the Lord reveals by spiritual ideas, but in an ineffable manner, how the real fact is.
