I was instructed that in mutual love there is a certain derivative semblance of marriage love, in which the one desires to be the other's, and this reciprocally, which is proper to marriage love. But it is proper to mutual love that each one desires to give to the other all that one has, except for one's own life, which marriage love does desire to give. This shows that mutual love is derived from marriage love.
4436. I was instructed that in mutual love there is a certain derivative species of conjugial love, [such] that one wills to be the other's, and thus reciprocally; this is [the nature] of conjugial love; but that of mutual love is, that one wills to give all that is his to the other, except his own life, which [last] is what conjugial love wills [to give]. Hence it may be manifest that mutual love is derived from conjugial love.
4436. Instructus sum, quod in amore mutuo sit quaedam species derivata amoris conjugialis, quod unus vellet esse alterius, et sic reciproce, quod est amoris conjugialis, sed amoris mutui quod unus velit dare quod ejus est omne alteri, praeter suam vitam, quod amor conjugialis vult; inde constare potest, quod amor mutuus derivetur ab amore conjugiali.
