Sacred Scripture (Dole translation 2014) 87

87. It is much the same in the other instances - for example, where it says joy it also says gladness, as in the following examples.

Behold joy and gladness, [people] slaughtering an ox. (Isaiah 22:13)

They will obtain joy and gladness; sadness and groaning will flee. (Isaiah 35:10; 51:11)

Gladness and joy have been cut off from the house of our God. (Joel 1:16)

There will be an end to the voice of joy and the voice of gladness. (Jeremiah 7:34; 25:10)

The fast of the tenth month will become joy and gladness for the house of Judah. (Zechariah 8:19)

So that we may rejoice all our days, make us glad. (Psalms 90:14-15)

Be glad in Jerusalem; rejoice in her. (Isaiah 66:10)

Rejoice and be glad, O daughter of Edom. (Lamentations 4:21)

Let the heavens be glad and the earth rejoice. (Psalms 96:11)

They will make me hear joy and gladness. (Psalms 51:8)

Joy and gladness will be found in Zion, praise and the voice of song. (Isaiah 51:3)

You will have gladness, and many will rejoice over his birth. (Luke 1:14)

I will make the voice of joy and the voice of gladness cease, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride. (Jeremiah 7:34; 16:9; 25:10)

Once again the voice of joy and the voice of gladness will be heard in this place, and the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride. (Jeremiah 33:10-11)

There are other passages as well.

[2] The reason it says both “joy” and “gladness” is that joy has to do with what is good and gladness with what is true, or joy has to do with love and gladness with wisdom. The underlying cause is that joy is of the heart and gladness is of the spirit, or joy arises from our will and gladness from our understanding.

We can see that this also involves a marriage of the Lord and the church from the fact that it speaks of “the voice of joy and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride” (Jeremiah 7:34; 16:9; 25:10; 33:10-11), and the Lord is the bridegroom and the church is the bride. On the Lord as the bridegroom, see Matthew 9:15; Mark 2:19-20; Luke 5:34-35; and on the church as the bride, see Revelation 21:2, 9; 22:17. That is why John the Baptist said, “The bridegroom is the one who has the bride” (John 3:29).

Doctrine of the Sacred Scripture (Rogers translation 2014) 87

87. The case is the same with all other such instances. Take, for example, places where joy is mentioned and also gladness, as in the following:

Behold, joy and gladness, the slaying of oxen.... (Isaiah 22:13)

They shall obtain joy and gladness; sorrow and sighing shall flee away. (Isaiah 35:10, 51:11)

...cut off...from the house of our God [are] joy and gladness. (Joel 1:16)

(Taken from them will be) the sound of joy and the sound of gladness.... (Jeremiah 7:34, 25:10)

...the fast of the tenth [month] shall be for the house of Judah an occasion of joy and gladness.... (Zechariah 8:19)

...that we may rejoice...all our days! Make us glad.... (Psalms 90:14-15)

Be glad in Jerusalem; rejoice in her.... (Isaiah 66:10)

Rejoice and be glad, O daughter of Edom.... (Lamentations 4:21)

The heavens will be glad, the earth will rejoice. (Psalms 96:11)

(They) will make me hear joy and gladness.... (Psalms 51:8)

Joy and gladness will be found in (Zion), confession and the sound of singing. (Isaiah 51:3)

(There will be) gladness, and many will rejoice at His birth. (Luke 1:14)

I will cause to cease...the sound of joy and the sound of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride. (Jeremiah 7:34, 16:9, cf. 25:10)

Again there shall be heard in this place...the sound of joy and the sound of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride.... (Jeremiah 33:10-11)

And elsewhere.

[2] Both joy and gladness are mentioned together because joy has to do with goodness and gladness with truth; or to put it another way, because joy is connected with love and gladness with wisdom. For joy is an expression of the heart, and gladness an expression of the soul; or to put it another way, joy is a matter of the will, and gladness of the intellect.

That a marriage of the Lord and the church is present in these expressions as well is apparent from the declaration, “the sound of joy and the sound of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride” (Jeremiah 7:34, 16:9, 25:10, 33:10-11), in which the Lord is the bridegroom and the church is the bride. That the Lord is the bridegroom may be seen in Matthew 9:15, Mark 2:19-20, and Luke 5:34-35; and that the church is the bride, in Revelation 21:2, 9 and 22:17. That is why John the Baptist says of Jesus, “He who has the bride is the bridegroom” (John 3:29).

Doctrine of Sacred Scripture (Dick translation) 87

87. Other expressions are used in this way like joy and gladness, as in the following passages:

Behold joy and gladness, slaying the ox. Isaiah 22:13.

They shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away. Isaiah 35:10; 51:11.

Is not ... gladness and joy cut off from the house of our God? Joel 1:16.

The voice of joy shall cease and the voice of gladness. Jeremiah 7:34; 25:10.

The fast of the tenth month shall be to the house of Judah joy and gladness. Zechariah 8:19.

That we may rejoice ... all our days. Make us glad. Psalms 90:14-15.

Be glad in Jerusalem, and rejoice in her. Isaiah 66:10.

Rejoice and be glad, O daugher of Edom. Lamentations 4:21.

Let the heavens be glad (A.V. rejoice), and let the earth rejoice (A.V. be glad). Psalms 96:11.

Make me to hear joy and gladness. Psalms 51:8.

Joy and gladness shall be found in Zion, confession (A.V. thanksgiving) and the voice of melody. Isaiah 51:3.

There shall be gladness, and many shall rejoice at His birth. Luke 1:14.

I will cause to cease ... the voice of joy (A.V. mirth), and the voice of gladness, the voice of the

bridegroom, and the voice of the bride. Jeremiah 7:34; 16:9; 25:10.

Again there shall be heard in this place ... the voice of joy, and the voice of gladness; the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride. Jeremiah 33:10-11.

and elsewhere.

[2] Both joy and gladness are mentioned in these passages because joy relates to good and gladness to truth; or, joy relates to love and gladness to wisdom. For joy pertains to the heart and gladness to the soul; that is, joy pertains to the will and gladness to the understanding. It is evident that the marriage of the Lord and the Church is also involved in these dual expressions, as mention is made of the voice of joy and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride, in Jeremiah 7:34; 16:9; 25:10; 33:10-11; for the Lord is the bridegroom and the Church is the bride.

That the Lord is the bridegroom, may be seen in Matthew 9:15; Mark 2:19-20; Luke 5:35; and that the Church is the bride, may be seen in Revelation 21:2, 9; and Revelation 22:17. Therefore John the Baptist says of Jesus: He that hath the bride is the bridegroom. John 3:29.

Doctrine of the Holy Scripture (Potts translation 1904) 87

87. The same rule holds good for other words; for example, where "joy" is mentioned, so is "gladness:"

Behold joy and gladness, slaying the ox (Isa. 22:13).

They shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away (Isaiah 35:10; 51:11).

Gladness and joy are cut off from the house of our God (Joel 1:16).

There shall be taken away the voice of joy, and the voice of gladness (Jeremiah 7:34; 25:10).

The fast of the tenth [month] shall be to the house of Judah for joy and gladness (Zech. 8:19).

That we may rejoice all our days, make Thou us glad (Ps. 90:14-15).

Be ye glad in Jerusalem, and rejoice in her (Isa. 66:10).

Rejoice and be glad, O daughter of Edom (Lam. 4:21).

The heavens shall be glad, and the earth shall rejoice (Ps. 96:11).

Make me to hear joy and gladness (Ps. 51:8).

Joy and gladness shall be found in Zion, confession and the voice of singing (Isa. 51:3).

There shall be gladness, and many shall rejoice at His birth (Luke 1:14).

I will cause to cease the voice of joy and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride (Jeremiah 7:34; 16:9; 25:10).

There shall be heard in this place the voice of joy and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride (Jeremiah 33:10-11).

The reason why both "joy" and "gladness" are mentioned is that "joy" is of good and "gladness" of truth, or "joy" is of love and "gladness" of wisdom. For joy is of the heart and gladness of the soul, or joy is of the will and gladness of the understanding. That there is a marriage of the Lord and the church in these expressions also is evident from its being said,

The voice of joy and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride (Jeremiah 7:34; 16:9; 25:10; 33:10-11).

The Lord is the "bridegroom," and the church is the "bride."

That the Lord is the bridegroom, see Matthew 9:15; Mark 2:19-20; 5:34; 5:35

And that the church is the bride, Rev. 21:2, 21:9; 22:17.

And therefore John the Baptist said of Jesus:

He that hath the bride is the bridegroom (John 3:29).

Doctrina Novae Hierosolymae de Scriptura Sacra 87 (original Latin 1763)

87. Simile est cum reliquis; sicut quod ubi dicitur "Gaudium" etiam dicatur "Laetitia." Ut in his:-

"Ecce gaudium et laetitia occidere bovem" (Esaias 22:13). "Gaudium et laetitia assequentur... fugient tristitia et gemitus" (Esaias 35:10; 51:11).

"Excisum est e domo Dei nostri laetitia et gaudium" (Joel 1:16).

"Abrogabitur... vox gaudii et vox laetitiae" (Jeremias 7:34; 25:10).

"Jejunium decimi erit domui Jehudae in gaudium et laetitiam" (Sacharias 8:19).

"Ut gaudeamus omnibus diebus nostris, laetifica nos" (Psalm 90:14-15).

"Laetemini in Hierosolyma, ... gaudete in ea" (Esaias 66:10).

"Gaude et laetare, filia Edomi" (Threni 4:21).

"Laetabuntur caeli et gaudebit terra" (Psalm 96:11). 1

"Audire me facient gaudium et laetitiam" (Psalm 51:10). 2

"Vox gaudii et vox laetitiae, vox Sponsi et vox Sponsae" (Jeremias 7:34; 16:9; 25:10; 33:10-11);

Et Dominus est Sponsus et Ecclesia est Sponsa.

Quod Dominus sit Sponsus, videatur, Matthaeus 9:15; Marcus 2:19-20; Lucas 5:34-35;

Et quod Ecclesia sit Sponsa, Apocalypsis 21:2, 9; 22:17.

Quare Johannes Baptista dicit de Jesu,

"Qui habet Sponsam Sponsus est" (Johannes 3:29).
