411. We read that we are to love the Lord God above all things, and our neighbor as ourselves (Luke 10:27). To love our neighbor as ourselves means not despising our neighbors in comparison with ourselves. It means treating them justly and not judging them wrongfully. The law of goodwill pronounced and given by the Lord himself is this:
Whatever you want people to do for you, do likewise for them. This is the Law and the Prophets. (Matthew 7:12; Luke 6:31-32)
This is how people who love heaven love their neighbor. People who love the world, however, love their neighbor on a worldly basis for a worldly benefit. People who love themselves love their neighbor in a selfish way for a selfish benefit.
411. We read:
You are to love the Lord God above all and your neighbour as yourself, Luke 10:27.
Loving the neighbour as oneself means not despising him compared with oneself, dealing justly with him, and not passing wicked judgment upon him. The law of charity promulgated and given by the Lord Himself is this:
Whatever you wish people to do to you, do the same to them; for this is the Law and the Prophets, Matthew 7:12, Luke 6:31-32.
That is how those who are impelled by the love of heaven love the neighbour; but those who are impelled by the love of the world love the neighbour in worldly fashion and for worldly reasons, and those who are impelled by self-love love the neighbour in selfish fashion and for selfish reasons.
411. It is written,
Thou shalt love the Lord thy God above all things, and thy neighbor as thyself (Luke 10:27).
To love the neighbor as oneself is, not to hold him in light esteem in comparison with oneself, to deal justly with him, and not to pass evil judgments upon him. The law of charity set forth and given by the Lord is this:
All things whatsoever ye would that men should do unto you, do ye even so unto them; for this is the law and the prophets (Matthew 7:12; Luke 6:31, 32).
So do they love the neighbor who are in the love of heaven; while those who are in the love of the world love the neighbor from the world and for the sake of the world; and those who are in the love of self love the neighbor from self and for the sake of self.
411. It is written:
'Thou shalt love the Lord thy God above all things, and the neighbor as thyself.' Luke 10:25.
To love the neighbor as oneself is, not to despise him in comparison with oneself, to deal justly with him, and not to judge evil concerning him. The law of charity laid down and given by the Lord Himself is this:
"All things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them; for this is the Law and the Prophets" Matthew 7:12; Luke 6:31-32.
In this way do those love the neighbor who are in the love of heaven; but those who are in the love of the world love him from worldly motives and for the sake of the world, while those who are in the love of self love the neighbor from self and for the sake of self.
