True Christianity #575 (Rose, 2010)

575. The qualities of people who have not been regenerated are further described in the following comparisons and similes in Isaiah:

The spoonbill and the vulture will possess it, and the owl and the raven will dwell there. He will stretch over it a line of pointlessness and plumb lines of devastation. Thornbushes will climb its altars; thistles and brambles will climb up on its fortifications. It will be a home for dragons, a courtyard for the daughters of an owl. Wild beasts of the desert will encounter night birds, and the satyr will meet with its mate. The night creature will also rest there. The blackbird will nest there, and lay eggs, and brood, and hatch them in its shadows. Indeed, the hawks will gather there, each one with its mate. (Isaiah 34:11, 13-15)

True Christian Religion #575 (Chadwick, 1988)

575. There is a further description of what the unregenerated person is like in the comparison and similes found in Isaiah:

The spoonbill and the vulture shall possess it, and the owl and the raven shall live there, He will stretch across it a measuring-line of emptiness, and plumb-lines of desolation. From there the thorn shall climb up its altars 1 , the thistle and briar in its fortifications; and it becomes a dwelling of dragons, a courtyard for the daughters of the owl. There shall meet there tziim and iyim, and the satyr shall encounter his partner; indeed lilith shall rest there. There the blackbird shall build its nest, lay eggs, gather food and hatch its young in its shadow. There indeed shall kites, flock, one with his partner. 2 Isaiah 34:11, 13-15.

Footnotes:

1. Better 'palaces'; cf. Arcana Caelestia 7293-7294.

2. It is not entirely clear, either in the Latin or the original Hebrew, what all the creatures named are; where the Hebrew word is kept in Latin, it is also kept in English.

True Christian Religion #575 (Ager, 1970)

575. What man is when not regenerated can be still further made clear by the following comparisons and similitudes from Isaiah:

The pelican and the porcupine shall possess it, and the owl and the raven shall dwell in it; and he shall stretch out over it the line of emptiness, and the plummet of devastation. And thorns shall come up upon her altars, the thistle and bramble in her fortresses; and she shall become a habitation of dragons, and a court for the daughters of the owl; the Tziim shall meet with the Ijim, and the satyr shall meet his fellow; the night monster shall rest there. There shall the merula make her nest, and gather and hatch under her shadow; there shall the vultures also be gathered, everyone with her mate (Isaiah 34:11-15).

True Christian Religion #575 (Dick, 1950)

575. The nature of the unregenerate man may be further described by the following comparisons and similitudes in Isaiah:

"The cormorant and the bittern shall possess it; the owl also and the raven shall dwell in it: and he shall stretch out upon it the line of emptiness (A.V., confusion), and the plummets of desolation (A.V., stones of emptiness)... And thorns shall come up upon her altars (A.V., in her palaces), nettles and brambles in the fortresses thereof; and it shall be an habitation of dragons, and a court for daughters of the owl. The ziim (A.V., wild beasts of the desert) shall also meet with the ijim (A.V., wild beasts of the island), and the satyr shall cry to his fellow; the lilith (A.V., the screech owl) also shall rest there... There shall the black bird (A.V., great owl) make her nest and lay, and gather and hatch under her shadow: there shall the vultures also be gathered, every one with her mate" 34:11, 13-15.
