True Christianity #715 (Rose, 2010)

715. The reason why Melchizedek (who represented the Lord) brought bread and wine out to Abram and gave him a blessing is that divine goodness and divine truth are the most universal qualities throughout heaven and the church. We read the following about Melchizedek:

Melchizedek, king of Salem, brought bread and wine to Abram. He was a priest to God the Highest. He gave him a blessing. (Genesis 14:18-19)

The following passage in David makes it clear that Melchizedek represented the Lord:

You are a priest forever of the kind Melchizedek was. (Psalms 110:4)

For more proof that these things are said of the Lord, see Hebrews 5:6, 10; 6:20; 7:1, 10-11, 15, 17, 21. Melchizedek brought out bread and wine because these two elements include all the qualities of heaven and of the church, and therefore all that is a blessing. The bread and wine in the Holy Supper perform the same function.

True Christian Religion #715 (Chadwick, 1988)

715. Since Divine good and Divine truth are the most universal principles of everything to do with heaven and the church, this was why Melchizedek, who represented the Lord, brought out bread and wine to Abram, and blessed him. We read of Melchizedek:

Melchizedek, king of Salem, brought out to Abram bread and wine; and he was priest to God most high, and he blessed him, Genesis 14:18-19.

It is clear that Melchizedek represented the Lord from these words in the Psalms of David:

You are a priest for ever after the fashion of Melchizedek, Psalms 110:4, That this was said of the Lord may be seen in Hebrews 5:5-10; 6:20; 7:1, 10-11, 15, 17, 21. The reason why he brought out bread and wine was that these two include everything to do with heaven and the church, and so with blessing, in the same way as bread and wine do in the Holy Supper.

True Christian Religion #715 (Ager, 1970)

715. As the Divine good and the Divine truth are the most universal of all things of heaven and the church, so Melchizedek, who represented the Lord, brought forth bread and wine to Abram, and blessed him. Respecting Melchizedek, it is written:

Melchizedek, king of Salem, brought forth for Abram bread and wine; and he was the priest of God Most High. And he blessed him (Genesis 14:18, 19).

That Melchizedek represented the Lord, is evident from these words in David:

Thou art a priest forever, after the order of Melchizedek (Psalms 110:4).

That this was said of the Lord may be seen in Hebrews 5:5-10; 6:20; 7:1, 10-11, 15, 17, 21. He brought forth bread and wine, because those two include all things pertaining to heaven and the church, thus all things of blessing, the same as the bread and the wine in the holy supper.

True Christian Religion #715 (Dick, 1950)

715. Since Divine Good and Divine Truth are the fundamental universals of all things of heaven and the Church, Melchizedek, who represented the Lord, brought forth bread and wine to Abraham, and blessed him. Of Melchizedek it is thus written:

"Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine (to Abraham): and he was the priest of the most high God. And he blessed him" Genesis 14:18-19.

Melchizedek represented the Lord, as is evident from these words in David:

"Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek" Psalms 110:4.

That these words relate to the Lord may be seen in Hebrews:

5:6, 10; 6:20; 7:1, 10-11, 15, 17, 21.

Melchizedek brought forth bread and wine because these two include all things of heaven and the Church, and consequently all things that relate to blessing, just as the bread and wine do in the Holy Supper.
