Potts(1905-1910) 4480

4480. And let them dwell in the land. That this signifies in respect to life, is evident from the signification of "to dwell," as being life (see above n. 4467). By the "land" here as elsewhere is signified the church (n. 662, 1066, 1067, 1262, 1733, 1850, 2117, 2118, 2928, 3355, 4447), thus "to dwell in the land" signifies similarity of life according to the things of the church. Whatever is written in the Word is in itself and in its essence spiritual; it is known that the Word is spiritual, but its spiritual does not appear in the letter, for in the letter it is worldly, especially in the historical parts; but when the Word is being read by man, what is worldly in it becomes spiritual in the spiritual world, that is, with the angels, for they cannot think otherwise than spiritually on every subject; and such is the case with the expression "to dwell in the land." To think spiritually is to think of the things of the Lord's kingdom, thus of the things of the church.

Elliott(1983-1999) 4480

4480. 'Let them dwell in the land' means in life. This is clear from the meaning of 'dwelling' as life, dealt with above in 4467. Here as elsewhere 'the land' means the Church, 662, 1066, 1067, 1262, 1733, 1850, 2117, 2118 (end), 2928, 3355, 4447, so that 'dwelling in the land' means similarity of life that conforms to the ways of the Church. Everything written in the Word is in itself and in essence spiritual. It is well known that the Word is spiritual, but this spirituality is not visible in the letter, for the content of the letter is worldly, especially in the historical sections. But when it is read by man the worldly content in it becomes spiritual in the spiritual world, that is, among the angels. For the angels are unable to think except in a spiritual way about anything whatever, and so cannot think of 'dwelling in the land' except in a spiritual way. Thinking in a spiritual way is thinking about the things that belong to the Lord's kingdom, and so about those that belong to the Church.

Latin(1748-1756) 4480

4480. `Et habitent in terra': quod significet quoad vitam, constat ex significatione `habitare' quod sit vita, de qua supra n. 4467; per `terram' hic sicut alibi significatur Ecclesia, n. 662, 1066, 1067, 1262, 1733, 1850, 2117, 2118 f., 2928, 3355, 4447; ita per `habitare in terra' significatur similitudo vitae secundum illa {1} quae sunt Ecclesiae. Quicquid in Verbo scriptum est, hoc in se et in sua essentia est spirituale; quod Verbum sit spirituale, notum est, sed spirituale ejus non apparet in littera, in littera enim est mundanum, imprimis {2} in historicis, at cum legitur ab homine, mundanum quod ibi, fit spirituale in mundo spirituali, hoc est, apud angelos; illi enim non cogitare possunt quam spiritualiter de unaquavis re; ita quoque de `habitare in terra';

@1 quoad vitam in illis$ @2 cumprimis$
