214. "'And to anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may see.'" This symbolically means, so as to heal their understanding, to keep them from profaning and falsifying genuine truths of wisdom.
Eyes symbolize the intellect, and the sight of the eyes intelligence and wisdom, as may be seen in no. 48. And since eye salve symbolizes medicine for it, it follows that to anoint the eyes with eye salve means, symbolically, to heal the intellect, so that it may see truths and become wise. Otherwise the genuine truths of the Word are profaned and adulterated.
214. 'And anoint thine eyes with eye-salve that thou mayest see' signifies so that the understanding may be healed lest the genuine truths of wisdom be profaned and falsified. That the understanding is signified by 'eyes,' and intelligence and wisdom by 'the sight of the eyes' may be seen (48); and when by 'eye-salve' a remedy for it is signified, it follows that by 'anoint the eyes with eye-salve' is signified to heal the understanding, so that it may see truths and be wise; and unless this takes place, the genuine truths of the Word are profaned and adulterated.
214. And anoint thine eyes with eye salve, that thou mayest see, signifies that their understanding may be healed, lest the genuine truths of wisdom should be profaned and falsified. That by "the eyes" is signified the understanding, and by "the eye-sight" intelligence and wisdom, may be seen, (48). And since by "eye-salve" a medicine for the same is signified, it follows that by "anoint thine eyes with eye-salve," is signified to heal the understanding, that it may see truths and be wise; for unless this is the case, the genuine truths of the Word are profaned and adulterated.
