Apocalypse Revealed (Rogers translation 2007) 332

332. And the sun became as black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became like blood. This symbolically means that all goodness of love was adulterated in those people, and every truth of faith falsified.

The sun symbolizes the Lord in respect to His Divine love, and thus the goodness of love emanating from Him; and in an opposite sense it symbolizes the Lord's Divinity denied, and thus the goodness of love adulterated. See no. 53 above. And because the sun symbolizes the goodness of love, therefore the moon symbolizes the truth of faith. For the sun has a reddish glow owing to its fire, while the moon glows white from the light radiating from the sun, and fire symbolizes the goodness of love, while light symbolizes the truth arising from that goodness. Regarding the moon, see also the places cited above in no. 53.

The sun is said to have become as black as sackcloth of hair because good adulterated is, in itself, evil, and evil is black.

The moon is said to have become like blood because blood symbolizes Divine truth, and in an opposite sense Divine truth falsified. See nos. 379, 684 below.

The sun and moon are described in almost the same way in Joel:

The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the coming of the great and terrible day of Jehovah. (Joel 2:31)

Apocalypse Revealed (Coulson translation 1970) 332

332. 'And the sun became black as a hairy sack, and the moon became as blood' signifies with those every good of love adulterated, and every truth of faith falsified. That by 'the sun' is signified the Lord as to Divine Love, and consequently the good of love from Him; and in the opposite sense the Lord's Divine denied, and consequently the good of love adulterated, may be seen above (53). And because 'the sun' signifies the good of love, 'the moon' in consequence signifies the truth of faith; for the sun glows red because of fire, and the moon shines white because of light from the sun, and 'fire' signifies the good of love, and 'light' the truth derived from that good. Concerning the moon, the passages cited above (53) may be seen also. It is said that 'the sun became black as a hairy sack' because adulterated good in itself is evil, and evil is black. 'The moon' is said to have become 'as blood' because 'blood' signifies Divine Truth, and in the opposite sense Divine Truth falsified, as may be seen below (379, 684). Almost the same thing is said of 'the sun' and 'the moon' in Joel:

The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and terrible day of Jehovah comes. Joel 2:31 [H.B. Joel 3:4].

Apocalypse Revealed (Whitehead translation 1928) 332

332. And the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood, signifies the adulteration of all the good of love in them, and the falsification of all the truth of faith. That "the sun" signifies the Lord as to Divine love, and thence the good of love from Him; and in the opposite sense, the denial of the Lord's Divinity, and thence the adulteration of the good of love, may be seen above, (53). And as "the sun" signifies the good of love, "the moon" therefore signifies the truth of faith; for the sun is red from fire, and the moon is white from the light of the sun; and fire signifies the good of love, and light, the truth from that good. Concerning the moon, see also the passages adduced above, (53). It is said, "the sun became black as sackcloth of hair," because adulterated good in itself is evil, and evil is black; and the reason why it is said "the moon became as blood," is, because "blood" signifies the Divine truth, and in the opposite sense, the Divine truth falsified, as may be seen below, (379[1-7], 684). Nearly the same is said of the sun and moon in Joel:

The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and terrible day of Jehovah cometh, (Joel 2:31).

"Sol vertetur in tenebras, et Luna in sanguinem, antequam venit dies Jehovae magnus et terribilis," (Joel 3:4 (B.A. 2:31)).
