Apocalypse Revealed (Rogers translation 2007) 458

458. So as not to worship demons. This symbolically means that thus they were caught up in the evils of their lusts, and acted in concert with their like in hell.

Demons symbolize lusts for evil arising from a love of the world. That is because people in hell who are caught up in those lusts are called demons, and people on earth who are caught up in them too, become demons after death. They also have an affiliation with those in hell. For everyone is affiliated with spirits in respect to his affections, so closely that the two are inseparable. It is apparent from this that to worship demons is to yield to those lusts from a love of them.

Someone, then, who invokes faith alone as the chief tenet of his religion or as his idol - he, because he does not search out any evil in himself that he calls a sin, and therefore does not determine to remove it by repentance, remains caught up in it. And because every evil is composed of lusts, and is nothing but a bundle of lusts, it follows that a person who does not search out any evil in himself and refrain from it as a sin against God, which is possible solely through repentance, after death becomes a demon.

[2] Demons symbolize just such lusts in the following passages:

They sacrifice to demons, not to God. (Deuteronomy 32:17)

(The children of Israel) no longer offered their sacrifices to demons, after whom they had played the harlot. (Leviticus 17:7, cf. Psalms 106:37)

Ziyyim will meet with 'iyyim, and the forest demon will encounter its companion. (Isaiah 34:14)

Ziyyim will sing there, and their houses will be full of 'ochim; the offspring of owls will dwell there, and forest demons will caper there. (Isaiah 13:21).

Ziyyim, 'iyyim, 'ochim, and the offspring of owls symbolize various lusts. Forest demons are the kinds of lusts exhibited by priapi and satyrs.

Babylon... has become a dwelling place of demons, and a prison for every foul spirit... (Revelation 18:2)

The demons that the Lord cast out embodied such lusts when they lived in the world - regarding which see Matthew 8:16, 28; 9:32-33; 10:8; 12:22; 15:22; Luke 4:33-37, 41; 8:2, 8:26-40; 9:1, 9:37-42, 9:49; 13:32.

Apocalypse Revealed (Coulson translation 1970) 458

458. 'That they should not adore demons' signifies that thus they are in the evils of their own lusts, and make one with their like in hell. By 'demons' are signified the lusts of evil arising from love of the world. This is because in hell those who are in those lusts are called demons; and men also who are in the same become demons after death. There is also a conjunction between such men and them; for every man is conjoined with spirits as to his affections to such an extent that they make one. From these considerations it is plain that 'to adore demons' is to appease those lusts because of a love of them. Therefore he who invokes faith alone as the head of his religion or as his idol remains in evil, because he does not search out any evil with himself which he terms a sin, and therefore he does not will to remove it by repentance; and as every evil is made up of lusts and is nothing else but a bundle of lusts, it follows that he who does not search out any evil with himself and flee from it as a sin against God, which is done solely by repentance, after death becomes a demon.

[2] Nothing else but such lusts are signified by the 'demons' and 'demoniacs' in the following passages:

They sacrifice to demand, not to God. Deuteronomy 32:17.

The sons of Israel shall no more offer sacrifices unto the demons, after whom they have gone a whoring. Leviticus 17:7; Psalms 106:37.

The ziim shall meet with the ijim, and the demon of the wood shall meet his companion. Isaiah 34:14.

The ziim shall lie there, and their houses shall be full of ochim, and the daughters of the owl shall dwell there, and the demons of the woods shall dance there. Isaiah 13:21.

By 'ziim,' 'ijim,' 'ochim,' and 'daughters of the owl' are signified various lusts. 'Demons of the woods' are such lusts as pertain to priapuses and satyrs.

Babylon has become the habitation of demons, and the hold of every unclean spirit. Revelation 18:2.

The 'demons' that the Lord cast out were such lusts when they lived in the world, concerning which [see]. Matthew 8:16, 28; 9:32-33; 10:8; 12:22; 15:22, Mark 1:32-34; Luke 4:33-37, 41; 8:2, 26-40; 9:1, 37-42, 49; 13:32.

Apocalypse Revealed (Whitehead translation 1928) 458

458. That they should not adore demons, signifies that thus they are in the evils of their lusts, and make one with their like in hell. By "demons" are signified the lusts of evil springing from the love of the world; the reason is, because in hell they are called demons who are in those lusts; and men also, who are in the same, become demons after death. There is also a conjunction between them and such men; for every man is conjoined with spirits as to his affections, even so that they make a one; from which it is evident, that to "adore" demons, is to sacrifice to those lusts from the love of them. Therefore he who invokes faith alone, as the head of his religion, or as his idol, remains in evil, by reason of his not searching out any evil in himself which he calls a sin, and consequently is not desirous of removing it by repentance; and as every evil is composed of lusts, being nothing but a bundle of lusts, it follows, that he who does not search out any evil in himself, and shun it as a sin against God, which can only be done by repentance, becomes a demon after death.

[2] Nothing but such lusts are signified by "demons" in the following passages:

They sacrifice to demons, not to God, (Deuteronomy 32:17).

The sons of Israel shall no longer sacrifice to demons, after which they have committed whoredom, (Leviticus 17:7; Psalms 106:37).

The Ziim shall meet with the Ijim, and the demon of the woods shall meet with his companion, (Isaiah 34:14).

The Ziim shall lie there, and their houses shall be full of Ochim, and the daughters of the owl shall dwell there, and the demons of the woods shall dance there, (Isaiah 13:21).

By "Ziim," "Ijim," "Ochim," "the daughters of the owl," are signified various lusts; "wood demons" are such lusts as appertain to priapuses and satyrs:

Babylon is become the habitation of demons, and the hold of every unclean spirit, (Revelation 18:2).

The demons, which the Lord cast out, were such lusts, when they lived in the world (concerning which see Matthew 8:16, 28; 9:32-33; 10:8; 12:22; 15:22; Mark 1:32, 34; Luke 4:33-37, 41; 8:2, 26-40; 9:1, 37-42, 49; 13:32).

"Sacrificant Daemonibus, Deo non," (Deuteronomius 32:17);

Filii Israelis "non sacrificabunt 1amplius Daemonibus, post quos scortati sunt," (Leviticus 17:7; Psalm 106:37);

"Occurrent Tziim cum Ijim, et Daemon sylvestris socio suo obviabit," (Esaias 34:14);

"Cubabunt 2ibi Tziim, et implebuntur Domus eorum Ochim, et habitabunt ibi Filiae noctuae, et Daemones sylvestres saltabunt ibi," (Esaias 13:21);

Daemones, quos Dominus ejecit, fuerant tales concupiscentiae cum vixerunt in mundo (De quibus Matthaeus 8:16, 28; 9:32-33; 10:8; 12:22; 15:22; Marcus 1:32, 34; 3Luca 4:33-37, 41; 8:2, 26-40; 9:1, 37-42, 49; 513:32). 4
