Apocalypse Revealed (Rogers translation 2007) 697

697. 16:11 And they blasphemed the God of heaven because of their sufferings and because of their sores. This symbolically means that they could not acknowledge the Lord alone to be God of heaven and earth, owing to feelings of repugnance springing from interior falsities and evils, arising from their acknowledgment and acceptance of the dogma regarding faith alone.

To blaspheme the God of heaven means, symbolically, to deny or refuse to acknowledge the Lord alone as God of heaven and earth (nos. 571, 582). Their sufferings symbolize the distresses attendant on acknowledging this, as in no. 696 above, thus feelings of repugnance springing from interior falsities; for whatever one finds repugnant is also distressing. Distresses are predicated of falsities. Sores symbolize interior evils, as in no. 678 above. And because interior evils and falsities arise from an acknowledgment and acceptance of the dogma regarding faith alone, therefore this, too, is symbolically meant.

Apocalypse Revealed (Coulson translation 1970) 697

697. [verse 11] 'And they blasphemed the God of heaven for their annoyances and for their sores' signifies that they could not acknowledge the Lord Only to be the God of heaven and earth, on account of the resistances resulting from interior untruths and evils springing from their having received and acknowledged the dogma concerning faith alone. By 'to blaspheme the God of heaven' is signified to deny or not to acknowledge the Lord Only to be the God of heaven and earth (571, 582). By 'annoyances' are signified the annoyances of acknowledging it, as above (696), thus the resistances resulting from the interior untruths, for that which resists is an annoyance. The annoyances are predicated of the untruths. By 'sores' are signified interior evils, as above (678), and because interior evils and untruths spring from their having received and accepted the dogma concerning faith alone, therefore this also is signified.

Apocalypse Revealed (Whitehead translation 1928) 697

697. Verse 11. And they blasphemed the God of heaven, because of their distresses and their sores, signifies that they could not acknowledge the Lord alone to be the God of heaven and earth by reason of repugnances arising from the interior falsities and evils, that spring from the acknowledgment and reception of the dogma concerning faith alone. "To blaspheme the God of heaven," signifies to deny or not to acknowledge the Lord alone to be the God of heaven and earth, (571, 582); by "distresses" is signified the distresses of acknowledging it, as above, (696), thus repugnances arising from interior falsities, for what is repugnant is a distress. Distress is predicated of falsities; by "sores" are signified interior evils, as above, (678); and as interior evils and falsities spring from the acknowledgment and reception of the dogma concerning faith alone, therefore this also is signified.

Apocalypsis Revelata 697 (original Latin 1766)

697. (Vers.
