Apocalypse Revealed (Rogers translation 2007) 757

757. "A prison for every foul spirit, and a prison for every unclean and loathsome bird!" This symbolically means that the evils willed and so done by the people in those hells, and the falsities entertained in thought and in consequent intention, are diabolical, because the people have turned away from the Lord to themselves.

A prison symbolizes a hell, because these Roman Catholics were imprisoned there. A spirit symbolizes everything pertaining to their affection or will and of the consequent action, and a bird symbolizes everything pertaining to the thought or intellect and consequent intention. A foul spirit and an unclean bird accordingly symbolize all the evils willed and so done, and all the falsities entertained in thought and consequent intention. Moreover, since the evils and falsities entertained by these people are found in the hells, therefore the symbolical meaning is that their evils and falsities are diabolical. In addition, because these people have turned away from the Lord to themselves, every unclean bird is also called loathsome.

Similar symbolism is used to describe Babylon in the Prophets, as in Isaiah:

Babylon... will be as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah. It will never be inhabited..., so that Arabs will not tarry there... But ziyyim 1will lie there, their houses will be full of 'ochim, 2the offspring of owls will dwell there, and satyrs will caper there. 'Iyyim 3also will reply in its palaces, and dragons in its pleasant palaces. (Isaiah 13:19-22)

I will... cut off from Babylon the name and remnant... I will make it a possession of the bittern... (Isaiah 14:22-23)

And in Jeremiah:

...in Babylon shall dwell ziyyim 1and 'iyyim 3and the offspring of owls... As when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah and their neighbors..., no son of man shall dwell in it. (Jeremiah 50:39-40)

It is apparent from this that a prison for every foul spirit, and a prison for every unclean and loathsome bird, means symbolically that the evils willed and so done by the people in those hells, and the falsities entertained in thought and consequent intention, are diabolical, because the people have turned away from the Lord to themselves.

[2] It is apparent from the Word that birds symbolize such things as have to do with the intellect and thought and consequent intention, and this in both senses, bad and good. They are found in a bad sense in the following passages there:

In the middle of the week He shall bring an end to sacrifice... (At length) on the bird of abominations shall be desolation. Even until the consummation... there shall rain down devastation. (Daniel 9:27)

The pelican and the bittern shall possess (the land). The screech owl and the raven shall dwell in it. (Isaiah 34:11)

Nothing else than hellish falsities are symbolized by 'ochim, 2ziyyim, 1the offspring of owls, and dragons in the passages cited above, as also by the birds that came down on the carcasses which Abram drove away (Genesis 15:11), by the birds which were given human corpses for food (Jeremiah 7:33; 15:3; 16:4; 19:7; 34:20; Ezekiel 29:5; Psalms 79:1-2).

[3] Birds are found in a good sense in the following passages:

Creeping thing and bird... shall praise the name of Jehovah. (Psalms 148:10, 13)

In that day I will make a covenant for them... with the birds of the sky, and the creeping things of the ground. (Hosea 2:18)

...ask the beasts, and they will teach you, and the birds of the sky, and they will tell you... Who among all these does not know that the hand of Jehovah does this? (Job 12:7-9)

I looked, when behold, there was no man; all the birds of the sky had flown away. (Jeremiah 4:24-26)

Both the birds of the sky and the beasts have fled away..., (because) I will make Jerusalem a heap of ruins, a den of dragons. (Jeremiah 9:10-11)

There is no truth, no mercy, no knowledge of God... Therefore the land will mourn... as regards the beasts of the field and the birds of the sky. (Hosea 4:1, 3)

I am God... calling a bird from the east, a man of My counsel from a far country. (Isaiah 46:9, 11)

Assyria, a cedar in Lebanon... In its branches all the birds of the sky made their nests..., and in its shade all great nations dwelled. (Ezekiel 31:3, 6)

[4] Similar statements to that made of Assyria as a cedar here are found elsewhere, as in Ezekiel 17:23, Daniel 4:10-14, 20-21, Mark 4:32, Luke 13:19.

Speak to every sort of bird and to every beast of the field: ."..come... to... a great sacrifice upon the mountains of Israel...." (Thus) I will set My glory among the nations. (Ezekiel 39:17, 21, cf. Revelation 19:17)

And so on regarding birds elsewhere, as in Isaiah 18:1, 6; Ezekiel 38:20; Hosea 9:11; 11:10-11.

That birds symbolize such things as have to do with the intellect and its consequent thought and intention is clearly apparent from birds in the spiritual world. There, too, one sees birds of every kind and every species - in heaven very beautiful ones, birds of paradise, turtle doves, and doves - in hell dragons, screech owls, eagle owls, and others of that kind - all of which are objective representations of thoughts springing from good affections in heaven, and of thoughts springing from evil affections in hell.

Footnotes:

1. A Hebrew word (צִיִּים), appearing six times in the Old Testament (Psalms 72:9; 74:14). It seems to refer to desert dwellers, and in contexts suggesting animals, to desert creatures, but the actual identity is unknown. It may not be a precise term.

2. Another Hebrew word (אֹחִים), appearing only once in the Old Testament (Isaiah 13:21:4 identifies them as birds of the night.

3. Another Hebrew word (אִיִּים), appearing only three times in the Old Testament (Isaiah 13:22; 34:14

Apocalypse Revealed (Coulson translation 1970) 757

757. 'And a hold of every unclean spirit and a hold of every unclean and hateful bird' signifies that the evils of will and thence of deed, and the untruths of thought and thence of deliberation, of those who are in those hells are diabolical, because they are turned away from the Lord to their own selves. By 'a hold' is signified hell, because they have been imprisoned there. By 'spirit' is signified everything that is of affection or will and thence of deed; and by 'bird' is signified everything that is of thought or understanding and thence of deliberation. Therefore by 'unclean spirit' and unclean bird' are signified all the evils that are of will and thence of deed and all the untruths that are of thought and thence of deliberation; and because these are in the hells with them it is therefore signified that they are diabolical; and because they are turned away from the Lord to their own selves the 'bird' is termed 'hateful.' Babel is described by similar things in the prophets, thus in Isaiah:

Babel shall be as God's overthrowing Sodom and Gomorrah, it shall not be inhabited to eternity, so that the Arab shall not tarry there. The ziim shall lie down there, and their houses shall be filled with ochim, and the daughters of the owl shall dwell there, and satyrs shall dance there; the ijim also shall answer in her palaces, and dragons also in the palaces of her delights. Isaiah 13:19-22.

In the same:

I will cut off from Babel the name and remnant; I will make her an inheritance of the bittern. Isaiah 14:22-23.

And in Jeremiah:

In Babel shall dwell the ziim and the ijim and the daughters of the owl, according to God's overthrowing Sodom and Gomorrah and the suburbs thereof; no son of man shall dwell there Jeremiah 1 39-40.

It is plain from these that by 'a hold of every unclean spirit, and of every unclean and hateful bird' is signified that the evils of will and thence of deed, and the untruths of thought and thence of deliberation, of those who are in the hells are diabolical because they are turned away from the Lord to their own selves.

[2] That' birds 'signify such things as are of the understanding and thought and thence of deliberation in both a good and a bad sense is plain from the Word. In the bad sense there in these passages:

In the midst of the week He shall make 1the sacrifice to cease, at length upon the bird of abominations [shall be] desolation, until the consummation the devastation shall drip down. Daniel 9:27.

The cormorant and the bittern shall possess the land, the screech-owl and the raven shall dwell therein. Isaiah 34:11.

Nothing else but infernal untruths are signified by 'ochim,' 'ziim,' 'daughters of the owl' and 'dragons' in the passages cited above; also by:

The birds that came down upon the carcass, which Abram drove away. Genesis 15:11.

The birds to which their carcasses would be given for food. Jeremiah 7:33; 15:3; 16:4; 19:7; 34:20; Ezekiel 29:5; Psalms 79:1-2.

The birds that devour what has been sown. Matthew 13:3-4.

[3] In a good sense in these passages:

Creeping thing and bird, let them praise the Name of Jehovah. Psalms 148:10.

I will make a covenant with them in that day, with the bird of the heavens and the creeping thing of the land, Hosea 2:18.

Ask the beasts and they shall teach thee, and the birds of heaven and they shall tell thee. Who does not know from all these that the hand of Jehovah does it? Job 12:7-9.

I saw when, behold, there is no man, every bird of the heavens has flown away. Jeremiah 4:24-26.

From the bird of the heavens even to the beast they have fled, because I will make Jerusalem heaps, a habitation of dragons. Jeremiah 9:10-11 [H.B. 9-10]; 12:9.

There is no truth (veritas), no mercy, no recognition of God; on account of this the land shall mourn as to the beast of the field and as to the bird of the heavens, Hosea 4:1, 3.

I am God, calling the bird from the east, the man of deliberation from afar off. Isaiah 46:9 [, 11].

Asshur is a cedar in Lebanon, in his branches all the birds of the heavens have built their nests, and in his shadow all the great nations have dwelt. Ezekiel 31:3, 6.

[4] Things similar to this said of Asshur as a cedar are said elsewhere, as Ezekiel 17:23; Daniel 4:10-14, 20-21 [H.B. 7-11, 17-18]; Matthew 13:31-32; Mark 4:32; Luke 13:19.

Say to the bird of every wing, and to every beast of the field, Come to a great sacrifice upon the mountains of Israel; thus will I give My glory among the nations. Ezekiel 39:17, 21; Revelation 19:17; besides elsewhere, as Isaiah 18:1, 6; Ezekiel 38:20; Hosea 9:11; 11:10-11; Zephaniah 1:3; Psalms 8:6-8 [H.B. 7-9]; 50:11; 104:10, 12. That 'birds' signify things that are of the understanding and thence of thought and deliberation is quite plain from the birds in the spiritual world. Birds of every genus and species also appear there, the most beautiful ones in heaven, birds of paradise, turtle-doves and doves. In hell dragons, screech-owls, horned owls and others like them. All of these are life-like representations of thoughts derived from good affections in heaven, and of thoughts derived from evil affections in hell.

Apocalypse Revealed (Whitehead translation 1928) 757

757. And the hold of every unclean spirit, and the hold of every unclean and hateful bird, signifies that the evils of the will and thence of the deed, and the falsities of thought and thence of design, of those who are in those hells, are diabolical, because they are turned away from the Lord to themselves. By "a hold" is signified hell, because there they are imprisoned; by "spirit" is signified everything that is of the affection or the will and thence of the deed; and by "bird" is signified everything that is of the thought or the understanding and thence of the design. Therefore by "unclean spirit" and "unclean bird" are signified all the evils which are of the will and thence of the deed, and all the falsities which are of the thought and thence of the design. And because these are with them in the hells, it is therefore signified that they are diabolical; and because they are turned away from the Lord to themselves, it is also called, "a hateful bird." Babel is described by similar things in the prophets; thus in Isaiah:

Babel shall be as God's overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah; it shall not be inhabited to eternity, so that the Arab shall not tarry there; the ziim shall lie down there, and their houses shall be filled with ochim, and the daughters of the owl shall dwell there, and satyrs shall dance there; the ziim also shall answer in her palaces, and the dragons in her palaces of luxuries, (Isaiah 13:19-22).

In the same:

I will cut off from Babel the name and remnant; I will make her an inheritance for the bittern, (Isaiah 14:22-23).

And in Jeremiah:

In Babel shall dwell the ziim and ijim and daughters of the owl, according to God's overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah and its villages; no son of man shall dwell there, (Jeremiah 50:39-40).

It is manifest from these passages, that by "the hold of every unclean spirit, and of every unclean and hateful bird," is signified that the evils of the will and thence of the deed, and the falsities of the thought and thence of the design, of those who are in those hells, are diabolical, because they are turned away from the Lord to themselves.

[2] It is manifest from the Word, that "birds" signify such things as are of the understanding and thought and thence of design, in each sense, both evil and good. In the evil sense they are mentioned in these passages:

In the midst of the week I will make the sacrifice to cease, at length upon the bird of abominations shall be desolation, unto the consummation it shall drop upon the devastation, (Daniel 9:27).

The cormorant and the bittern shall possess the land, the screech owl and the raven shall dwell in it, (Isaiah 34:11).

Nothing else but infernal falsities are signified by "the ochim," "the ziim," "the daughters of the owl," and "the dragons," in the passages adduced above; also by:

The birds which came down upon the carcasses, which Abram drove away, (Genesis 15:11).

By the birds to which their carcasses should be given for food, (Jeremiah 7:33; 15:3; 16:4; 19:7; 34:20; Ezekiel 29:5; Psalms 79:1-2);

Also by the birds which devour that which was sowed, (Matthew 13:3-4).

[3] In the good sense, in these passages:

Let the creeping thing and the bird praise the name of Jehovah, (Psalms 148:10).

I will make a covenant for them in that day with the bird of the heavens and the creeping thing of the earth, (Hosea 2:18).

Ask the beasts and they shall teach thee, and the birds of heaven and they shall declare unto thee; who from all these hath not known that the hand of Jehovah doeth it? (Job 12:7-9)

I saw, when, behold, there was no man, every bird of the heavens flew away, (Jeremiah 4:25).

From the bird of the heavens even to the beast they are fled, because I will make Jerusalem heaps, the habitation of dragons, (Jeremiah 9:10-11; 12:9).

There is no truth, no mercy, no knowledge of God; therefore the land shall mourn as to the beast of the field and as to the bird of the heavens, (Hosea 4:1, 3).

I am God, that calls the bird from the east, the man of My counsel out of a land afar off, (Isaiah 46:9, 11).

Assyria was a cedar in Lebanon; all the birds of the heavens nested in its branches, and in its shadow dwelt all great nations, (Ezekiel 31:3, 6).

[4] Things similar to this are said of Ashur as a cedar elsewhere, as Ezekiel 17:23; Daniel 4:10-14, 20-21; Matthew 13:31-32; Mark 4:32; Luke 13:19. Say to the bird of every wing, and to every beast of the field, come to the great sacrifice upon the mountains of Israel; so will I give My glory among the nations, (Ezekiel 39:17, 21; Revelation 19:17; besides other places, as Isaiah 18:1, 6; Ezekiel 38:20; Hosea 9:11; 11:9, 11; Zephaniah 1:3; Psalms 8:6-8; 50:11; 104:10, 12).

That "birds" signify the things which are of the understanding and thence of thought and design is clearly manifest from the birds in the spiritual world, where there appear also birds of every genus and every species; in heaven most beautiful ones, birds of paradise, turtledoves, and doves, in hell dragons, screech owls, horned owls, and other similar ones; all of which are representations to the life, of thoughts from good affections in heaven, and of thoughts from evil affections in hell.

"Erit Babel sicut eversio Dei, Sodoma et Gomorrha; non habitabitur in aeternum, ita ut non moretur ibi Arabs; cubabunt ibi tziim, et implebuntur domus eorum ochim, et habitabunt ibi filiae noctuae, et satyri saltabunt ibi: respondebunt etiam ijim 1in palatiis ejus, et dracones in palatiis deliciarum ejus," (13:19-22);

apud eundem:

"Exscindam Babeli nomen et residuum; ponam eam in haereditatem anatariae," (14:22-23);

In sensu malo ibi in his locis:

"In medio septimanae cessare faciet 2sacrificium: tandem super Avem abominationum desolatio, usque ad consummationem stillabit super devastationem," 3(Daniel 9:27);

"Possidebunt terram platea et anataria, ulula et corvus habitabunt in ea," (Esaias 34:1).

Non aliud quam falsa infernalia significantur per "ochim," "tziim," "filias noctuae," "dracones," in locis supra adductis;

Per Aves, quibus darentur cadavera eorum in cibum, (Jeremias 7:33; 15:3; 16:4; 19:7; 34:20; Ezechiel 29:5; Psalm 79:1-2);

In bono sensu in his locis Laudent Nomen Jehovae "reptile et Avis," (Psalm 148:10);

"Feriam illis foedus in die illo cum Avi caelorum et reptili terrae," (Hoschea 2:18);

"Interroga bestias et docebunt te, et Aves caeli et annuntiabunt tibi; quis non novit ex his omnibus quod manus Jehovae faciat illud," (Hiob 12:7-9);

"Vidi cum ecce non homo, omnis Avis caelorum avolarunt," (Jeremias 4:24-26);

"Ab Ave caelorum usque ad bestiam avolarunt, quia dabo Hierosolymam acervos, habitaculum draconum," (Jeremias 9:9-10 (B.A. 10-11); 12:9);

"Non veritas, non misericordia, non cognitio Dei: propterea lugebit terra quoad bestiam agri et quoad Avem caelorum "(Hoschea 4:1, 3);

"Ego Deus, vocans ab ortu Avem, e terra longinqua virum consilii," (Esaias 46:9, (11));

"Aschur cedrus in Libano; in ramis ejus nidificarunt omnes aves caelorum, et in umbra ejus habitarunt omnes gentes magnae," (Ezechiel 31:3, 6); 5

similia ut hic de Aschure ut cedro dicuntur alibi (Ut Ezechiel 17:23; Daniel 4:7-11, 17-18 (B.A. 10-14, 20-21); Matthaeus 13:31-32; Marcus 4:32; 6Luca 13:19);

"Dic Avi omnis alae, et omni bestiae agri, Venite ad sacrificium magnum super montibus Israelis: sic dabo gloriam Meam inter gentes," (Ezechiel 39:17, 21; Apocalypsis 19:17).

(Praeter alibi, ut Esaias 18:1, 6; Ezechiel 38:20; Hoschea 9:11; 11:9, 11; 7Zephanias 1:3; Psalms 8:7-9 (B.A. 6-8); Psalm 50:11; Psalm 104:10, 12). 8
