Apocalypse Revealed (Rogers translation 2007) 955

955. 22:17 And the spirit and the bride say, "Come!" This symbolically means that heaven and the church long for the Lord's advent.

The spirit symbolizes heaven, the bride symbolizes the church, and saying "Come!" symbolizes a longing for the Lord's advent. It is clear from chapter 21:2, 21:9-10 that the church meant by the bride is the New Church, the Holy Jerusalem, as may be seen in nos. 881, 895. And the spirit means heaven because angelic spirits are meant, of whom the New Heaven consists, as symbolized in chapters 14:1-7; 19:1-9; 20:4-5.

The church, here called the bride, does not mean a church composed of people whose faith consists of falsities, but a church composed of people whose faith consists of truths, for it is the latter who long for light, thus who long for the Lord's advent. See no. 954 above.

Apocalypse Revealed (Coulson translation 1970) 955

955. [verse 17] 'And the spirit and the bride are saying, Come' signifies that heaven and the Church will long for the Lord's coming. By 'the spirit' is signified heaven, by 'the bride' the Church, and by 'to say, Come' is signified to long for the Lord's coming. That the New Church, which is the holy Jerusalem, is understood by 'the bride' is established from chapter 21:2, 9, so, as may be seen (881, 895). And the reason why by 'the spirit' is understood heaven is because the angelic spirits are understood, of whom the New Heaven treated of above (chapter 14:1-7; 19:1-9; 20:4-5) [is constituted]. By the Church, which is here called 'the bride,' is not understood the Church consisting of those who are in untruths of faith, but the Church consisting of those who are in the truths of faith, for these long for the light and consequently for the coming of the Lord, as above (954).

Apocalypse Revealed (Whitehead translation 1928) 955

955. Verse 17. And the Spirit and the Bride say, Come, signifies that heaven and the church desire the Lord's coming. By "the Spirit" is signified heaven, by "the Bride" the church, and by "saying, Come" is signified to desire the Lord's coming. That the New Church, which is the holy Jerusalem, is meant by "the Bride," is evident (from chapter Revelation 21:2, 9-10 (see 881, 895)); and that by "the Spirit" is meant heaven, is, because the angelic spirits are meant, of whom the New Heaven is to be formed, concerning whom above, (Revelation 14:1-7; 19:1-9; 20:4-5). By the church, which is here called "the Bride," is not meant the church consisting of those who are in falsities of faith, but the church consisting of those who are in truths of faith, for these desire light, consequently the Lord's coming, as above, (954).

Apocalypsis Revelata 955 (original Latin 1766)

955. (Vers. 17.)
