[NCE]1261. As nations symbolized good qualities, clans did too, since each nation consisted of a number of clans. The same is true for households, because each clan was made up of many households. (For more about a house or household, see 710.) Yet although clans symbolize goodness when mentioned in connection with nations, they symbolize truth when mentioned in connection with peoples. In David, for example:
Before you all the clans of the nations will bow down, because the kingdom is Jehovah's, and he is ruling over the nations. (Psalms 22:27-28)
And in the same author:
Give Jehovah — you clans of the peoples — give Jehovah glory and strength. (Psalms 96:7)
In the present and preceding verses of this chapter, clans refer to goodness, because they were the clans of the nations.

Potts(1905-1910) 1261

1261. As nations signified goods, so also did families, for each nation consisted of families; and so in like manner did households, for each family consisted of a number of households. (Concerning a "household" or "house," see above, n. 710.) "Families," however, signify goods when predicated of nations, and truths when predicated of peoples, as in David:

All the families of the nations shall bow themselves before Thee; for the kingdom is Jehovah's, and He is the ruler over the nations (Ps. 22:27-28). Again:

Give unto Jehovah, ye families of the peoples, give unto Jehovah glory and strength (Ps. 96:7). In the verse now before us, and also in the preceding verse of this tenth chapter of Genesis, "families" are predicated of goods, because they were families of the nations.

Elliott(1983-1999) 1261

1261. As 'nations' meant goods so also did families, for each nation was composed of families. 'Houses' likewise had the same meaning, for each family was made up of a number of houses. Concerning a house, see 710. 'Families' however means goods when used in reference to nations, but truths when used in reference to peoples, as in David,

All the families of the nations will bow down before You, for the kingdom is Jehovah's, and He rules among the nations. Ps 22:27, 28.

And in the same author,

Give to Jehovah, O families of the peoples, give to Jehovah glory and strength! Ps 96:7.

In the present verse and in the previous verse of this chapter 'families' has reference to goods because they were families of nations.

Latin(1748-1756) 1261

1261. Sicut 'gentes' significarunt bona, ita etiam 'familiae' quia unaquaevis gens ex familiis constabat; similiter 'domus' quia unaquaevis familia erat ex pluribus domibus; de domo videatur n. 710; sed 'familiae' significant bona cum praedicantur de gentibus, at vera cum praedicantur de populis, sicut apud Davidem, Incurvabunt se coram Te omnes familiae gentium, quia Jehovae regnum, et dominans in gentes, Ps. xxii 28, 29 [A.V. 27, 28];

et apud eundem, Date Jehovae, familiae populorum, date Jehovae gloriam et robur, Ps. xcvi 7. In hoc et praecedente versu hujus capitis praedicantur 'familiae' de bonis, quia familiae erant gentium.
