The symbolism of when he left Haran as a shadowy state for the Lord, like that which we experience in youth, can be seen from the symbolism of Haran in verses 31-32 of the previous chapter, Genesis 11.{*1} Terah was first to come to Haran, with Abram, and that is where Terah, Abram's father, died. The symbolism can also be seen from later passages describing Jacob's journey to Haran, where Laban was (Genesis 27:43; 28:10; 29:4 [搂搂3612, 3691]).
Haran was an area where worship was superficial and 钬?in the case of Terah, Abram, and Laban 钬?even idolatrous. But it does not mean the same thing deep down as it does on the surface; all it means is something that is vague. When the surface meaning develops into a deeper meaning, the notion of idolatry does not remain but is erased. Compare the way mountains gave rise to the thought of holy love (搂795); when the inner meaning develops out of the surface meaning, first the image of a mountain disappears and the idea of height remains, and then holiness is represented by the height. It is the same with all other images.
