Potts(1905-1910) 8357

8357. There He set for him a statute and a judgment. That this signifies the truth of order then revealed, is evident from the signification of "a statute," as being the external truth of the church; and from the signification of "a judgment," as being the internal truth of the church; consequently "to set for some one a statute and a judgment" denotes to set in order according to truths, consequently to reveal them. That "a statute" denotes the external truth of order, is because every external thing of the church was called "a statute," and every internal truth of order was called "a judgment."

Elliott(1983-1999) 8357

8357. 'There He established for him a statute and a judgement' means the truth of order, such as was revealed at that time. This is clear from the meaning of 'a statute' as the Church's outward truth; and from the meaning of 'a judgement' as the Church's inward truth, so that 'establishing for someone a statute and a judgement' implies setting something in order in accordance with truths, and consequently implies revealing them. The reason why 'a statute' means the outward truth of order is that every outward practice of the Church was called 'a statute', and every inward truth of order was called 'a judgement'.
