Apocalypse Explained (Tansley translation 1923) 1005

1005. (Verse 15) Behold, I come as a thief. That this signifies the Advent of the Lord, and the Last Judgment then, is evident from the signification of coming as a thief, when said of the Lord, as denoting His Advent, and the Last Judgment then; similarly as in other parts of the Word:

Continuation concerning the Sixth Precept:-

[2] That adultery is hell, and, consequently, abominable, any one may understand from the fact that divers semen is mingled in the womb of one woman. In a man's semen lies the inmost of man's life, and thence the commencement of a new life; it is holy from this fact. To make this common with the inmost initiaments of others, as is done in adulteries, is profane. Hence it is that adultery is hell, and that hell in general is called adultery. Because from such mingling nothing but putridity - also from the spiritual origin - can exist, it follows that adultery is abominable.

[3] Thence in the brothels in hell there appear foul things of every kind; and when light from heaven is let into them, adulteresses with adulterers are beheld like swine, lying in their own filth; and what is wonderful, they, like swine, are in their delights whilst in the midst of filth. But those brothels are kept closed, because when opened, a stench is exhaled that excites vomiting.

It is different in chaste marriages. In these the life of the man, by means of the seed, adds itself to the life of the wife, whence comes the intimate union from which they are not two but become one flesh. And according to such union conjugial love increases, and with it every good of heaven.

(Continuation respecting the Sixth Commandment)

[2] That adultery is hell, and consequently an abomination, anyone can perceive from the idea of the mixture of diverse seed in the womb of one woman, for in man's seed there lies hidden the inmost of his life, and thus the rudiment of a new life; and for this reason it is holy. To make this common with the inmosts and rudiments of others, as is done in adulteries, is profane. This is why adultery is hell, and why hell in general is called adultery. And as from such a mixture nothing but corruption, also from a spiritual origin, can exist, it follows that adultery is an abomination.

[3] Consequently in the brothels that are in hell, foulnesses of every kind appear; and when light out of heaven is let into them, adulteresses are seen lying with adulterers, like swine in filth itself; and what is wonderful, like swine they are in their delights when they are in the midst of filth. But these brothels are kept closed, because when they are opened a stench is exhaled that excites vomiting. It is otherwise in chaste marriages. 1005. (Vers. 15.) "Ecce venio sicut fur." - Quod significet adventum Domini, et tunc ultimum judicium,

constat ex significatione "venire sicut fur", cum de Domino, quod sit adventus Ipsius, et tunc ultimum judicium, similiter ut in Verbo alibi (Ut Matthaeus 6:19, 20; 24:42, 43; Obad. vers. 5; Joel 2:9; Hoschea 7:1).

Quod per "venire sicut fur", id significetur, est quia tribuitur Domino quod auferat cognitiones boni et veri, ac devastet ecclesiam, sicut fur aufert opes, et despoliat domum; tum quia ecclesia tunc in nocte et in tenebris est, nempe in falsis ex malo; et ultimus status ecclesiae etiam vocatur "nox", et falsa ex malo in quibus tunc sunt vocantur "tenebrae", et fur venit noctu cum tenebrae sunt: inde comparatio adventus Domini et ultimi judicii cum fure (videatur etiam supra, n. 193).

Quod adulterium sit infernum, et inde abominatio, quisque potest, ex idea commixtionis diversorum seminum in unius mulieris utero, concipere; semen hominis est in quo latet intimum ejus vitae, et inde incohamentum novae, quod ex eo sanctum est; hoc commune facere cum intimis et incohamentis aliorum, ut fit in adulteriis, profanum est: inde est quod adulterium sit infernum, et quod infernum in communi dicatur adulterium. Quia ex commixtione tali non potest non putredo, etiam ex spirituali origine, existere, sequitur quod adulterium sit abominatio.

[3] Exinde in lupanaribus, quae in inferno sunt, apparent fetores omnis generis, ac dum lux e caelo in illa immittitur, conspiciuntur adulterae cum adulteris sicut sues jacentes in ipsis sordibus; et quod mirum, similiter ac sues in deliciis suis sunt dum in medio sordium. At lupanaria illa tenentur clausa; quia dum aperiuntur, exhalatur nidor excitans vomitum. Aliter in castis conjugiis; in illis vita viri per semen se addit vitae uxoris; inde conjunctio intima, ex qua non duo, sed una caro fiunt; et secundum conjunctionem per id crescit amor conjugialis, et cum illo omne bonum caeli.
