143. Repent. That this signifies dissociation from them is evident from the signification of "repent" when predicated of those things which are signified by the doctrine of Balaam, and by the doctrine of the Nicolaitanes, as being to be dissociated from them. Repentance is nothing else, for no one can be said to repent unless he actually separate himself from those things of which he has repented; and he separates himself from them when he shuns them and holds them in aversion. (That this is repentance, or penitence, may be seen in The Doctrine of the New Jerusalem 159-172.)
143. Verse 16. Repent, signifies dissociation from these. This is evident from the signification of "repent," as being in reference to the things signified by "the doctrine of Balaam," and by "the doctrine of the Nicolaitans," to be dissociated from them. Nor is repentance anything else; for no one repents unless he actually separates himself from the things of which he has repented; and he separates himself from them only when he shuns them and turns away from them. "Resipisce." - Quod significet dissociationem ab illis, constat ex significatione "resipiscere", cum de illis quae significantur per "doctrinam Balaam", et per "doctrinam Nicolaitarum", quod sit dissociari ab illis. Resipiscentia nec aliud est; nam non est alicui resipiscentia nisi actualiter separet se ab illis a quibus resipuit; et tunc separat se ab illis, cum fugit illa, et aversatur illa.
