276. Verses 6-8. And in the midst of the throne, and round about the throne, were four animals full of eyes before and behind. And the first animal was like a lion, and the second animal like a calf, and the third animal had a face as a man, and the fourth animal was like a flying eagle. And the four animals had each by itself six wings roundabout; and they were full of eyes within, and they had no rest day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, who was, and who is, and who is to come.
"And in the midst of the throne and round about the throne were four animals full of eyes before and behind," signifies the guardianship and providence of the Lord to prevent the interior heavens being approached, except by the good of love and of charity, that lower things thence depending may be in order.
"And the first animal was like a lion," signifies the appearance in ultimates of Divine truth proceeding from the Lord as to the power and effect; "and the second animal like a calf," signifies the appearance in ultimates of Divine good as to defence; "and the third animal had a face as a man," signifies the appearance in ultimates of the Lord's Divine guardianship and providence as to wisdom; "and the fourth animal was like a flying eagle," signifies the appearance in ultimates of the Divine guardianship and providence as to intelligence, and as to circumspection in every direction.
"And the four animals had, each by itself six wings roundabout," signifies the appearance of the Divine spiritual in every direction around the Divine celestial; "and they were full of eyes within," signifies the Divine providence and guardianship; "and they had no rest day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy," signifies what is most holy proceeding from the Lord; "Lord God Almighty, who was, and who is, and who is to come," signifies who is infinite and eternal.
276. Verses 6b, 7, 8. And in the midst of the throne and around the throne were four animals, full of eyes before and behind. And the first animal was like a lion, and the second animal like a calf, and the third animal had a face like a man, and the fourth animal was like a flying eagle. And the four animals, each by itself had six wings round about, and they were full of eyes within, and they had no rest day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, who was, and who is, and who is to come. "And the first animal was like a lion," signifies the appearance, in ultimates of Divine truth proceeding from the Lord in respect to power and efficiency (n. 278; "and the second animal like a calf," signifies the appearance, in ultimates, of Divine good in respect to protection n. 279; "and the third animal had a face like a man," signifies the appearance, in ultimates, of the Divine guard and providence in respect to wisdom n. 280; "and the fourth animal was like a flying eagle," signifies the appearance, in ultimates, of the Divine guard and providence in respect to intelligence and as to circumspection on every side (n. 281-282.)
8. "And the four animals, each by itself, had six wings round about," signifies the appearance of the spiritual Divine on all sides about the celestial Divine n. 283; "and full of eyes within," signifies the Divine Providence and guard (n. 284); "and they had no rest day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy," signifies that which is most holy proceeding from the Lord. n. 285); "Lord God Almighty, who was, and who is, and who is to come," signifies the infinite and eternal (n. 286).

"Et in medio throni et circum thronum quatuor Animalia plena oculis ante et retro. Et Animal primum simile leoni, et secundum Animal simile vitulo, et tertium Animal habens faciem sicut homo, et quartum Animal simile aquilae volanti. Et quatuor Animalia, singula per se, habebant alas sex in circuitu, et intus 1
plena erant oculis, et requiem non habebant die et nocte, dicentia, Sanctus, sanctus, sanctus, Dominus Deus omnipotens, qui erat et qui est et qui venturus."
"Et in medio throni et circum thronum quatuor Animalia plena oculis ante et retro", significat custodiam et providentiam Domini ne interiores caeli adeantur nisi a bono amoris et charitatis, ut inferiora, quae inde pendent, in ordine sint (n. 277).

"Et Animal primum simile leoni", significat apparentiam in ultimis quoad potentiam et effectum Divini Veri procedentis a Domino (n. 278); "et secundum Animal simile vitulo", significat apparentiam in ultimis Divini Boni quoad tutelam (n. 279); "et tertium Animal habens faciem sicut homo", significat in ultimis apparentiam Divinae custodiae et providentiae quoad sapientiam (n. 280); "et quartum Animal simile aquilae volanti", significat in ultimis apparentiam Divinae custodiae et providentiae quoad intelligentiam et quoad circumspectionem undequaque (n. 281, 282).
