149. "'They shall be dashed to pieces like the potter's vessels.'" This symbolically means, as being of little or no account.
Their evils are called potter's vessels because potter's vessels symbolize things having to do with a person's own intelligence, all of which are false and in themselves of no account. So likewise in the book of Psalms:
You shall crush (the nations) with a rod of iron; You shall shatter them like a potter's vessel. (Psalms 2:9)
149. 'As the vessels of a potter shall they be broken in pieces signifies like little things of no account. 'The vessels of a potter' is said because by them are signified the things that are of one's own intelligence, which are all untrue and in themselves of no account. Likewise in David:
Thou shalt bruise the nations with an iron rod, thou shalt shatter them like the vessel of a potter. Psalms 2:9.
149. As the vessels of a potter shall they be broken in pieces, signifies, as of little or no account. It is said "the vessels of a potter" because by them are signified the things which are of one's own intelligence, which are all falsities, and in themselves of no account; so in David:
Thou shall break the nations in pieces with a rod of iron, Thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel, (Psalms 2:9).
Similiter apud Davidem:
"Conteres gentes Virga Ferrea, sicut Vas Figulinum disperges eas," (Psalm 2:9).
