560. Now when the dragon saw that it had been cast to the earth, it pursued the woman who gave birth to the male Child. (12:13) This symbolically means that after they were cast down, followers of the dragon in the world of spirits immediately began to harass the New Church because of its doctrine.
"When the dragon saw that it had been cast to the earth" means, symbolically, when the followers of the dragon saw that they had been separated from heaven and were in conjunction with people on earth (nos. 552, 558). Its pursuing the woman means, symbolically, that they immediately began to harass the Lord's church. That the woman it pursued is that church may be seen in no. 533. "Who gave birth to the male Child" means, symbolically, because of the doctrine. That the male child that the woman bore is the doctrine of the New Church may be seen in nos. 535, 542, 543, 545.

[verse 13] 'When the dragon saw that he was cast out into the land, he persecuted the woman who brought forth the son' signifies that after being cast down the dragonists in the world of spirits at once began to attack the New Church on account of its doctrine. 'When the dragon saw that he was cast out into the land' signifies when the dragonists saw that they were separated from heaven and in conjunction with the men of the earth (552, 558). 'He persecuted the woman' signifies that he at once began to attack the Lord's Church; that 'the woman' whom 'he persecuted' is that Church may be seen (533). 'Who brought forth the son' signifies on account of the doctrine; that 'the offspring' or 'male child' whom the woman brought forth is the doctrine of the New Church (535, 542-543, 545).

And when the dragon saw that he was cast unto the earth, he persecuted the woman that brought forth the son, signifies that the dragonists in the world of spirits, immediately after their being cast down, began to infest the New Church on account of its doctrine. "When the dragon saw that he was cast upon the earth," signifies that when the dragonists saw that they were separated from heaven, and in conjunction with men on the earth, (552, 558); "he persecuted the woman," signifies that they immediately began to infest the Lord's church; that "the woman" whom he persecuted is that church, may be seen, (533); "who brought forth the son," signifies on account of the doctrine; that "the offspring," or "the male, a son" which the woman brought forth, is the doctrine of the New Church (see 535, 542, 543, 545).
