561. But the woman was given two wings of the great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness to her place. (12:14) This symbolizes the Divine vigilance for the New Church and protection while it was still among a few.
The woman symbolizes the New Church (no. 533). Wings symbolize power and protection (no. 245). An eagle symbolizes intellectual sight and the resulting thought (no. 245). To fly means, symbolically, to perceive and be watchful (no. 245). The wilderness symbolizes the church desolate and thus existing among a few (no. 546). Her place symbolizes its state there. It follows from this that the woman's being given two wings of the great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness to her place, symbolizes the Divine vigilance for the New Church and protection while it was still among a few.
561. [verse 14] 'And to the woman were given the two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness to her own place' signifies Divine circumspection on behalf of that Church, and protection while it is still among a few. By 'the woman' is signified the New Church (533); by 'wings' is signified power and protection (245); by an 'eagle' is signified intellectual sight and thought therefrom (245); by 'to fly' is signified to look into and around (perspicere et circumspicere) (245); by 'the wilderness' is signified the Church desolated, and thus among a few (546); by 'place' is signified the state there. Resulting from these things it follows that by 'to the woman were given the two wings of a great eagle that she might fly into the wilderness to her own place' is signified Divine circumspection on behalf of the New Church, and protection while it is still among a few.
561. Verse 14. And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, signifies the Divine circumspection over that church, and its protection, while as yet among a few. By "the woman" is signified the New Church, (533); by "wings" is signified power and protection, (245); by "an eagle" is signified intellectual sight, and thought thence, (245); by "flying" is signified seeing and circumspection, (245); by "a wilderness" is signified the church desolated, and thus among a few, (546); by "place" is signified its state there. From these things it follows, that "there were given to the woman two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place," is signified the Divine circumspection over the New Church, and its protection, while yet it is among a few.
561. (Vers. 14.)
