Life50.
50. This shows us what a spiritual faith is and what a nonspiritual faith is. Spiritual faith is characteristic of people who do not commit sins, because the good actions of people who do not commit sins come from the Lord and not from themselves (see John 3:19-21)
50. It can be seen from this what the nature of a spiritual faith is and the nature of a faith not spiritual: that a spiritual faith is found in people who refrain from sinning, for people who refrain from sinning do good, not of themselves, but from the Lord, as may be seen in nos. John 3:19-21)
50. From these considerations it may be seen what spiritual faith is, and what the faith is which is not spiritual. Faith is spiritual with those who do not commit sins; for those who [do not] commit sins do good not from themselves but from the Lord, as may be seen above in Nos. 18-31; and by faith they become spiritual. Faith with them is the truth (veritas). This the Lord thus teaches in John:
This is the judgment, that light is come into the world, but men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.
But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God. John 3:19-21.
50. From all this it may be seen what spiritual faith is; and also what is faith not spiritual. Spiritual faith exists with those who do not commit sins, for those who do not commit sins do things that are good, not from themselves but from the Lord (see above, n. 18-21), and through faith become spiritual. Faith with these is the truth. This the Lord teaches in John:
This is the judgment, that the light is come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the light, because their works were evil. For everyone that doeth evil hateth the light, and cometh not to the light, lest his works should be reproved. But he that doeth the truth cometh to the light, that his works may be made manifest, that they have been wrought in God (John 3:19-21).
