The Last Judgment (New Century Edition 2020) 33

33. A Last Judgment Occurs When the Church Is at Its End, and the Church Is at Its End When There Is No Faith Because There Is No Caring

There are many reasons why a Last Judgment occurs when the church is at its end. The main one is that when this happens the equilibrium between heaven and hell begins to fail-and with that equilibrium goes our freedom, and once our freedom is gone, we can no longer be saved. We are then quite willingly carried away to hell; and, not being in a state of freedom, we cannot be led to heaven. This is because no one can be reformed without freedom, and all our freedom comes from the equilibrium between heaven and hell. Two chapters from Heaven and Hell support this point: one dealing with the equilibrium between heaven and hell (589-596) and one dealing with our being in a state of freedom because of this balance between heaven and hell (597-603). It also says there that without freedom no one can be reformed [598].

Last Judgement (Chadwick translation 1992) 33

33. VI. THE LAST JUDGMENT TAKES PLACE WHEN A CHURCH COMES TO AN END, AND THIS HAPPENS WHEN THERE IS NO FAITH BECAUSE THERE IS NO CHARITY.

There are many reasons why the Last Judgment takes place when a church comes to an end. The primary one is that the equilibrium between heaven and hell then begins to be destroyed, and together with it man's true freedom. When man's freedom is destroyed, he can no longer be saved. For then his loss of freedom carries him to hell, and he cannot be brought in freedom to heaven. No one can be reformed without freedom, and a person's freedom is wholly dependent upon the equilibrium between heaven and hell. This can be established from the two chapters in HEAVEN AND HELL, which deal with the equilibrium between heaven and hell (589-596) and man's freedom being maintained by this equilibrium (597-603). It is also shown there that no one can be reformed except in freedom.

Last Judgment (Whitehead translation 1892) 33

33. VI. THE LAST JUDGMENT EXISTS, WHEN THE END OF THE CHURCH IS; AND THE END OF THE CHURCH IS, WHEN THERE IS NO FAITH, BECAUSE THERE IS NO CHARITY.

There are many reasons why the Last Judgment exists when the end of the church is. The principal reason is, that then the equilibrium between heaven and hell begins to perish, and with the equilibrium man's freedom itself; and when man's freedom perishes, he can no longer be saved, for he cannot then be led to heaven in freedom, but from freedom is borne to hell; for no man can be reformed without freedom, and all man's freedom is from the equilibrium between heaven and hell. That it is so, may appear from two articles in the work on Heaven and Hell, where it treats, Of the Equilibrium between Heaven and Hell (589-596): and, That Man is in that Freedom by means of that Equilibrium between Heaven and Hell (597-603); and further, that no man can be reformed except in freedom.

De Ultimo Judicio 33 (original Latin 1758)

33. (VI.)
