Spiritual Experiences (Odhner and Nemitz translation 1998) 1830

1830. Universal realms interact with all the components of the human being, otherwise the individual parts could not remain intact

It is notable that the organs of the body interact entirely with their own atmospheres and with their modes of functioning, as, for example, the eye interacts with the ether, the ear with the air, the tongue with flavors carried and enhanced [to the taste] in water, the nostrils with odors in the air. Thus the individual organs are developed to match the functionings of their own universe, and are thus the organs adapted to it.

Spiritual Experiences (Buss translation 1902) 1830

1830. THAT UNIVERSALS CORRESPOND WITH THE THINGS WHICH ARE IN MAN, AND THAT OTHERWISE SINGULARS COULD NOT SUBSIST.

It may be known that the organs of the body correspond entirely to their atmospheres and their modes of action, as the eye to the ether, the ear to the air, the tongue to the things which swim in the water and excite [the taste], the nostrils to the odors in the atmosphere; and thus the singulars are formed to the modifications of their universe [or whole], and become in this way their conforming organs.

Experientiae Spirituales 1830 (original Latin 1748-1764)
