SS111.
111. Because without the Word there is no recognition of the Lord and therefore no salvation, when the Word was utterly distorted and corrupted by the Jewish nation and therefore made virtually null and void, it pleased the Lord to come down from heaven, come into the world, fulfill the Word, and thereby make it whole again, restore it, and give light again to us who live on earth. That is the intent of the Lord’s words:
The people who were sitting in darkness have seen a great light; the light has risen for those who were sitting in the region and shadow of death. (Matthew 4:16; Isaiah 9:2)
111. Since without the Word no concept of the Lord is possible, thus no salvation, therefore when the Word in the Jewish nation was completely falsified and adulterated, and so made virtually non-existent, it pleased the Lord to descend from heaven, come into the world and fulfill the Word, and by doing so repair and restore it, so as to give light again to the inhabitants of the earth. In the Lord’s words:
The people who sat in darkness have seen a great light; upon those who sat in the region and shadow of death, light has arisen. (Matthew 4:16, cf. Isaiah 9:2)
111. As without the Word there is no rational conception of the Lord, and thus no salvation, and when the Word with the Jewish nation was entirely falsified and defiled, and made as of none effect, it therefore pleased the Lord to descend from heaven; and, coming into the world, to fulfil the Word, and thus to renew and restore it, giving light again to the inhabitants of the earth, according to His own words:
The people which sat in darkness saw a great light (lumen); and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light (lux) is sprung up. Matthew 4:16; Isaiah 9:2.
111. As without the Word there is no knowledge of the Lord, and therefore no salvation, it pleased the Lord that when the Word had been wholly falsified and adulterated among the Jewish nation and thus as it were brought to nothingness, that He should descend from heaven and come into the world, and fulfill the Word, and thereby repair and restore it, and again give light to the earth's inhabitants, in accordance with His declaration:
The people that sat in darkness have seen a great light; and to those who sat in the region and shadow of death, light is sprung up (Matthew 4:16; Isaiah 9:2).
