30. This is by way of preface to what follows, so that the discussion there can readily be understood; the point being to demonstrate that the earthly meaning of the Word, which is its literal meaning, is the foundation, container, and support of its spiritual and heavenly meanings.

We premise these observations for the sake of those that follow, in order that they may be comprehended and understood; that it may now be seen at this point that the Word’s natural sense, which is its literal sense, is the foundation, containing vessel, and buttress of its spiritual and celestial senses.
