286. There was tremendous holiness and power in this law because it is a synopsis of all the elements of religion. It was engraved on two tablets, one of which contains a synopsis of all things related to God, and the other, a synopsis of all things related to us. For this reason the commandments of this law are called the ten words (Exodus 34:28; Deuteronomy 4:13; 10:4). They are called this because "ten" means all and "words" mean truths. Of course, they contained more than ten words. For an explanation that "ten" means all, and that tithes were established because of that meaning, see Revelation Unveiled 101; on the point that this law is a synopsis of all aspects of religion, see below [289].
286. The reason why such great holiness and power lay in the law was that it was a summary of the whole of religion. It was written on two tablets, one of which summarises all the provisions concerning God, the other all the provisions concerning man. That is why the commandments of the law are called the Ten Words (Exodus 34:28; Deuteronomy 4:13; 10:4); they are so called because ten means all, and words mean truths. For they contain more than ten words. For ten meaning all, and the institution of tenths 1 because of this meaning, see Apocalypse Revealed 101. It will be seen in the following pages that the law is a summary of the whole of religion.
Footnotes:
1. Or tithes.
286. Such great holiness and power were in that law, because it was the complex of all things of religion. It was written on two tables, one of which contained in the complex all things that look to God, and the other in the complex all things that look to man. Therefore the commandments of that law are called the "Ten Words" (Exodus 34:28; Deuteronomy 4:13; 10:4). They were so called because "ten" signifies all, and "words" signify truths; for they were more than ten words. That "ten" signifies all things, and that tithes (tenths) were instituted on account of that signification, may be seen in the Apocalypse Revealed (101[1-3]); and that that law is the complex of all things of religion, will be seen in what follows.
286. Such holiness and power resided in the Law because it comprised all things of religion. For it was written on two tables, one comprising all things relating to God, and the other all things relating to man;
therefore the Commandments of the Law are called the ten words. Exodus 34:28; Deuteronomy 4:13; and Deuteronomy 10:4.
They are so called because ten signifies all, and words signify truths; for there were more than ten words. That ten signifies all, and tithes were appointed on account of that signification, may be seen in The Apocalypse Revealed 101; and that the Law comprises all things of religion will be seen in what follows.
