True Christianity #310 (Rose, 2010)

310. In the spiritual meaning, murders stand for all methods of killing and destroying people's souls. There are many different methods, such as turning people away from God, religion, and divine worship; setting up roadblocks against such things; and persuading people to turn away from and even feel aversion to such things. All the devils and satans in hell practice these methods. People in our world who violate and prostitute the holy things of the church are connected to these devils and satans.

The king of the abyss, who is called Abaddon or Apollyon (meaning the Destroyer, Revelation 9:11), stands for people who use falsities to destroy souls. The "killed" in the prophetic Word have the same meaning, as for example in the following passages:

Jehovah God said, "Feed the sheep for slaughter whom their owners have killed. " (Zechariah 11:4-5, 7)

We have been killed all day long; we are considered a flock for slaughter. (Psalms 44:22)

He will cause those who are yet to come to take root in Jacob. Was he killed in the way that his henchmen would kill? (Isaiah 27:6-7)

A stranger comes only in order to steal and slaughter the sheep. I have come so that they may have life and abundance. (John 10:10; other such passages are Isaiah 14:21; 26:21; Ezekiel 37:9; Jeremiah 4:31; 12:3; Revelation 9:5; 11:7)

This is why the Devil is called "a murderer from the beginning" (John 8:44).

True Christian Religion #310 (Chadwick, 1988)

310. In the spiritual sense murders mean all manners of killing and destroying human souls. These are of many and varied kinds, for instance, turning them away from God, religion and the worship of God, making these things the subject of scandal, and persuading people of things which cause them to be hated and rejected. Such are all the devils and satans in hell, and linked with them are those in this world who offer violence to and prostitute the holiness of the church. It is those who destroy souls by means of falsities who are meant by the king of the abyss, called 'Abaddon' or 'Apollyon', that is, the destroyer, in Revelation 9:11; and in the prophetic parts of the Word by 'the slain', as in these passages:

Jehovah God has said, Feed the sheep to be slain, which their owners slaughtered, Zechariah 11:4-5, 7.

We were slain all day long; we were considered sheep for slaughter, Psalms 44:22.

Jacob will cause those who are to come to take root; has he not been slain even as he slew others? Isaiah 27:6-7.

A thief 1 does not come except to steal and slaughter sheep; I have come so that they may have life and plenty, John 10:10.

There are further passages of this kind, such as Isaiah 14:21; 26:21; Ezekiel 37:9 2 ; Jeremiah 4:31; 12:3; Revelation 9:4-5; 11:7. This is why the devil is called 'a murderer from the beginning' (John 8:44).

Footnotes:

1. The Latin text has 'a stranger', but this is corrected in the author's copy. The word 'sheep' has been added to the quotation.

2. This reference appears to be wrong; possibly is intended.

True Christian Religion #310 (Ager, 1970)

310. In the spiritual sense, murder means all modes of killing and destroying the souls of men, which modes are various and manifold, as for example, turning men away from God, religion, and Divine worship by insinuating scandalous thoughts against these, or by inducing such persuasions as cause aversion and even abhorrence. Such murderers are all the devils and satans in hell, with whom those in this world who violate and prostitute the sanctities of the church are in conjunction. Those who destroy souls by falsities are meant by the king of the abyss, who is called "Abaddon" or "Apollyon," that is, the Destroyer (Revelation 9:11); and in the prophetic Word [those whom they destroy] are meant by "the slain," as in the following passages:

Thus said Jehovah God, Feed the flock of slaughter which their possessors have slain (Zechariah 11:4-5, 7).

We are killed all the day long; we are counted as a flock for the slaughter (Psalms 44:22, 23).

Jacob shall cause them that come to take root. Is he slain according to the slaughter of them that are slain by him? (Isaiah 27:6, 7).

The thief cometh not but to steal and to kill the sheep; I am come that they may have life and abundance (John 10:10

(Besides elsewhere, as in Isaiah 14:21; 26:21; Ezekiel 37:9; Jeremiah 4:31, 12:3; Revelation 9:4, 5; 11:7.)

And therefore the devil is called:

A murderer from the beginning (John 8:44).

True Christian Religion #310 (Dick, 1950)

310. In the spiritual sense, murder means every method of killing and destroying the souls of men. Varied and manifold are the methods employed, such as turning men away from God, religion and Divine worship, raising scandal against these, and persuasively insinuating aversion and loathing. Such murderers are all the devils and satans in hell; and with them are associated those who in this world violate and defile the holy things of the Church. The destroyers of souls by means of falsities are meant by the king of the abyss, called Abaddon or Appollyon, that is, the destroyer, in Revelation 9:11 and in the prophetic Word by "the slain," as in these passages:

"Thus saith JEHOVAH my God; Feed the flock of the slaughter; Whose possessors slay them. Zechariah 11:4-5, 7.

"We are killed all the day long: we are counted as sheep for the slaughter" Psalms 44:22.

"Jacob shall cause them that come (A.V., He shall cause them that come of Jacob) to take root... is he slain according to the slaughter of them that are slain by him?" Isaiah 27:6-7.

"The stranger (A.V., thief) cometh not but for to steal, and to kill... I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. John 10:10;

besides in other places, as in Isaiah 14:21; 26:21; 27:9 for [Ezekiel 37:9]; Jeremiah 4:31; Jeremiah 12:3; Revelation 9:4; Revelation 11:7. This is why the devil is called "a murderer from the beginning" John 8:44.
