  9404.“并以色列长老中的七十人”表所有处于由真理所产生的良善之人。这从“七十”和“以色列长老”的含义清楚可知:“七十”是指完全或完整之物,因而是指所有事物或所有人(参看6508节);“以色列长老”是指那些处于由真理所产生的良善和从良善流出的真理之人。因为在圣言中,“长老或老年人”表示那些拥有智慧的人(6524节),因而表示那些由于真理的教义而过着一种良善生活的人;“以色列”表示那些属于属灵教会的人(642666376862686870357062719872017215722388059340节),因而表示那些处于通向良善的真理和流出真理的良善之人(参看79578234节)。由此明显可知,“以色列的七十个长老”表示那些处于由真理所产生的良善之人,在从人抽象出来的意义上表示这良善本身。主的“七十个门徒”(路加福音10:117)在内义上所表相同。以色列人分为十二个支派支派,有十二位首领,以及七十个长老管理他们。“十二支派”表示整体上教会所拥有的一切真理和良善(385839263939406063356337639766407836789179967997节);“十二位首领”表示一切首要真理(5044节);“七十个长老”表示由真理所产生的一切良善。

9404. And seventy of the elders of Israel. That this signifies all who are in good from truths, is evident from the signification of "seventy," as being what is full, thus all things and all persons (see n. 6508); and from the signification of "the elders of Israel," as being those who are in good from truths, and in truths from good. For by the "old" in the Word are signified those who are in wisdom (n. 6524), thus those who are in a life of good from the doctrine of truth; and by "Israel" are signified those who are of the spiritual church (n. 6426, 6637, 6862, 6868, 7035, 7062, 7198, 7201, 7215, 7223, 8805, 9340), thus those who are in truths through which is good, and in good from which are truths (see n. 7957, 8234). From this it is plain that by "the seventy elders of Israel" are signified those who are in good from truths, and abstractedly good from truths. Similar things are signified in the internal sense by the Lord's "seventy disciples" (Luke 10:1, 17). The sons of Israel were divided into twelve tribes, and over them were set twelve princes, and also seventy elders. By the "twelve tribes" were signified all truths and goods of the church in the complex (n. 3858, 3926, 3939, 4060, 6335, 6337, 6397, 6640, 7836, 7891, 7996, 7997); by the "twelve princes" all primary truths (n. 5044); and by the "seventy elders" all goods which are from truths. [2] When mention is made of "the good which is from truths," the spiritual church is meant, for this church is in good from truths. He who is not acquainted with the arcana of the church and of heaven may believe that all the good of the church is from truths, because good cannot be implanted except by means of truths; nay, that a man cannot know what good is except by means of truths. Yet the good that comes by means of truths is the good of the spiritual church, and regarded in itself is truth, which is called good when it becomes of the will and act, and consequently of the life. But the good which does not come forth by means of truths, but by means of the goods of mutual love, is the good of the celestial church, and regarded in itself is not truth, but good, because it is the good of love to the Lord. This good was represented by the Jewish Church, but the former good by the Israelitish Church, and therefore there was a division into two kingdoms. From what has been adduced in these passages it can be seen that the heaven of the Lord is divided into the spiritual heaven and the celestial heaven; and that the celestial heaven is the inmost or third heaven; and the spiritual heaven, the middle or second heaven.

9404. 'And seventy of the elders of Israel' means all who are governed by good which results from truths. This is clear from the meaning of 'seventy' as that which is complete, thus all things or all people, dealt with in 6508; and from the meaning of 'the elders of Israel' as those who are governed by good which results from truths and guided by truths which flow from good. For 'elders' in the Word means those with wisdom, 6524, thus those who lead a good life as a result of teachings declaring what is true; and 'Israel' means those who belong to the spiritual Church, 6426, 6637, 6862, 6868, 7035, 7062, 7198, 7201, 7215, 7223, 8805, 9340, thus those who are guided by truths that lead to good and governed by good from which truths flow, 7957, 8234. From all this it is evident that 'seventy elders of Israel' means those who are governed by good which results from truths, and that in the sense detached from persons that good itself is meant. The same is meant in the internal sense by 'the Lord's seventy disciples', Luke 10:1,17. The children of Israel were divided into twelve tribes, which had twelve princes or governors set in authority over them, and also seventy elders. 'The twelve tribes' meant all the truths and forms of good the Church possesses in their entirety, 3858, 3926, 3939, 4060, 6335, 6337, 6397, 6640, 7836, 7891, 7996, 7997; but 'the twelve princes' meant all the primary truths, 5044, and 'the seventy elders' all the forms of good resulting from truths.

[2] When the expression 'good which results from truths' is used the spiritual Church is meant; for this Church is governed by good resulting from truths. Anyone unacquainted with the arcana of the Church and of heaven may think that, since good cannot be implanted except through truths, all the good in the Church exists as a result of truths, indeed that a person cannot know what good is except through truths. However, the good which arises through truths is the spiritual Church's good, which regarded in itself is truth but is called good when it becomes part of will and action, and consequently of life. But good that does not arise through truths but through forms of the good of mutual love is the celestial Church's good, which regarded in itself is not truth but good since it is the good of love to the Lord. The Jewish Church represented this second kind of good, whereas the Israelite Church represented the first; and this accounts for their division into two kingdoms.
