  在黑暗中行走的百姓看见大光。(以赛亚书9:2;马太福音4:16);

Apocalypse Revealed (Rogers translation 2007) 413

413. And a third of the sun was struck, a third of the moon, and a third of the stars, and a third of them was darkened. This symbolically means that because of their evils springing from falsities and their falsities springing from evils, they did not know what love is, or what faith is, or any truth.

A third means, symbolically, all (no. 400). The sun symbolizes love (no. 53). The moon symbolizes intelligence and faith (no. 332). The stars symbolize concepts of truth and goodness from the Word (no. 51). To be darkened means, symbolically, to be unseen and unknown because of evils springing from falsities and falsities springing from evils.

Evils springing from falsities are found in people who adopt falsities having to do with religion and defend them to the point that they appear to be true. Then, when they live in accordance with them, they do evils as a result of the falsities, or the evils of falsity.

On the other hand, falsities springing from evils are found in people who do not regard evils as being sins, and still more in people who employ reasonings issuing from their natural self, and moreover from the Word, to establish in themselves that evils are not sins. Their very arguments are falsities springing from evils, and what we call the falsities of evil.

[2] Darkness symbolizes these falsities because light symbolizes truth, and when the light has been extinguished, darkness is left.

To confirm this we will first cite passages where things similar to those here in the book of Revelation are said regarding the sun, moon and stars, and darkness ensuing upon their being extinguished:

The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the coming of the great and terrible day of Jehovah. (Joel 2:31)

...the stars of heaven and their constellations will not give their light; the sun will be darkened in its rising, and the moon will not cause its light to shine. (Isaiah 13:10, cf. 24:21, 24:23)

When I extinguish you, I will cover the heavens..., I will cover the sun with a cloud, and the moon shall not give its light. All the luminaries of light in the heavens I will make dark over you, and bring darkness upon your land... (Ezekiel 32:7-8)

...the day of Jehovah... is at hand... The sun and moon grow dark, and the stars diminish their brightness. (Joel 2:1, 10)

Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from heaven... (Matthew 24:29, cf. Mark 13:24-25)

Who, if he elevates his mind, cannot see that in these places it is not the world's sun, moon and stars that are meant.

[3] That darkness symbolizes falsities of various kinds is clear from these passages:

Woe to you who desire the day of Jehovah! ...It will be one of darkness, and not light... Is not the day of Jehovah darkness and not light? Very dark, without any brightness? (Amos 5:18, 20)

(The day of Jehovah will be) a day of darkness and thick darkness, a day of clouds and overcast... (Zephaniah 1:15)

In that day... it will look to the land, which, behold, will be darkness...; and the light will grow dark in its ruins. (Isaiah 5:30, cf. 8:22)

...behold, the darkness covers the earth, and thick darkness the peoples. (Isaiah 60:2)

Give glory to Jehovah... before He causes darkness...; you look for light, but He turns it into thick darkness. (Jeremiah 13:16)

We look for light, but there is darkness and no brightness; we walk in thick darkness... We stumble at noonday as at twilight; among the living we are as dead men. (Isaiah 59:9-10)

Woe to those... who put darkness for light, and light for darkness. (Isaiah 5:20)

The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light. (Isaiah 9:2, cf. Matthew 4:16)

...the rising sun from on high (has appeared) to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death... (Luke 1:78-79)

If you give your soul to the hungry..., your light shall rise in the darkness, and your thick darkness shall be as the noonday. (Isaiah 58:10)

In that day... the eyes of the blind who are in thick darkness and gloom shall see. (Isaiah 29:18, cf. 42:16; 49:9)

(Jesus said,) "I am the light of the world; he who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life." (John 8:12)

Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you... I have come as a light into the world, that whoever believes in Me should not abide in darkness. (John 12:35, 46)

When I sit in darkness, Jehovah is a light to me. (Micah 7:8)

This is the judgment, that the light has come into the world, but men loved the darkness more than light... (John 3:19, cf. 1:4-5)

If... the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness! (Matthew 6:23, cf. Luke 11:34-36)

...this is your hour, and the power of darkness. (Luke 22:53)

Darkness in these places symbolizes falsity arising either from ignorance of truth or from some false tenet of religion, or from a life of evil.

Regarding people caught up in falsities having to do with religion, who are therefore caught up in evils in life, the Lord says that they should be "cast out into outer darkness" (Matthew 8:12, cf. 22:13; 25:30).

Apocalypse Revealed (Coulson translation 1970) 413

413. 'And a third part of the sun was smitten, and a third part of the moon, and a third part of the stars, and a third part of them was darkened' signifies that by reason of the evils derived from untruths and the untruths derived from evils they did not know what love is, what faith is, nor anything true. By 'a third part' is signified all (400); by 'the sun' is signified love (53); by 'the moon' is signified intelligence and faith (332); by 'the stars' are signified cognitions of truth and good out of the Word (51); by 'to be darkened' is signified not to be seen or known by reason of the evils derived from untruths and the untruths derived from evils. Those have evils derived from untruths who adopt untruths of religion and confirm them till they appear as truths, and while they are living in accordance with them make evils out of the untruths, or evils of untruth. Those, however, have untruths derived from evils who do not reckon evils as sins, and still more those who, by reasonings out of the natural man and especially out of the Word, confirm with themselves that evils are not sins. The confirmations themselves are untruths derived from evils, and are called untruths of evil.

[2] 'Darkness' signifies those things because 'the light' signifies truth, and darkness is brought about when the light is extinguished. For confirmation, the passages will first be quoted where things similar to those here in the Apocalypse are said of the 'sun,' the 'moon' and the 'stars,' and of the 'darkness' originated by the extinguishing of them:

The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and terrible day of Jehovah comes. Joel 2:31 [H.B. Joel 3:4].

The stars of the heavens and the constellations thereof shall not shine with their light (lux), the sun shall be darkened in his rising, and the moon shall not cause her light (lumen) to be bright [Isaiah 13:10].

Jehovah shall make a visitation upon the host of the height in the height, and upon the kings of the land upon the land, then shall the moon blush and the sun be ashamed]. 1Isaiah 24:21, 23.

When I shall extinguish thee I will cover the heavens, I will cover the sun with a cloud, and the moon shall not cause her light to shine, all the luminaries of light in the heavens will I black out over thee, and I will give darkness upon thy land. Ezekiel 32:7-8.

The day of Jehovah is near; the sun and the moon are blacked out, and the stars shall diminish their brightness. Joel 2:10.

Immediately after the affliction of those days, the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall down from heaven. Matthew 24:29; Mark 13:24-25.

Who that elevates his mind is not able to see that it is not the sun, the moon and the stars of the world that are understood in these passages?

[3] That untruths of various kinds are signified by darkness is established from these:

Woe to them desiring the day of Jehovah; it is a day of darkness and not of light; is not the day of Jehovah darkness and not light? thick-darkness and not brightness? Amos 5:18, 20.

The day of Jehovah is a day of darkness and of thick-darkness, a day of cloud and of clouding over, Zephaniah 1:15.

In that day he shall look down upon the land which, behold, is darkness, and the light shall grow dark in the destructions thereof. Isaiah 5:30; 8:22.

Behold darkness covers the land, and thick-darkness the peoples. Isaiah 60:2.

Give glory to Jehovah, before He cause darkness: we wait for the light, but He makes it into thick-darkness. Jeremiah 13:16.

We wait for the light, but behold darkness, and not brightness; we walk in thick-darkness; we stumble at noon as in the twilight, among the living as if dead. Isaiah 59:9-10.

Woe to them fashioning darkness into light, and light into darkness. Isaiah 5:20.

The people walking in darkness have seen a great light. Isaiah 9:2; [H.B. 1]; Matthew 4:16.

The day-spring from on high has appeared to those who are sitting in darkness and in the shadow of death Luke 1:[78], 79.

If thou shalt give thy soul to a hungry one, thy light shall rise in the darkness, and thy thick-darkness [shall be] as the noon-day. Isaiah 58:10.

In that day, the eyes of the blind, who are in thick-darkness and darkness, shall see. Isaiah 29:18; 42:16; 49:9.

Jesus said, I am the light of the world, he who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. John 8:12.

Walk while you have the light, lest darkness lay hold of you: I, the Light, have come into the world, that everyone who believes in Me should not abide in darkness. John 12:35, 46.

When I sit in darkness, Jehovah is the light unto me. Micah 7:8.

This is the judgment, that the light has come into the world, but men have loved the darkness more than the light. John 3:19; 1:4-5.

If the light (lumen) that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness. Luke 11:34-36.

This is your hour, and the power of darkness. Luke 22:53.

By 'darkness' in these places is signified untruth originating either out of ignorance of truth, or out of an untrue principle of religion, or out of a life of evil. Of those who are in untruths of religion, and consequently in evils of life, the Lord says:

That they are to be cast out into outer darkness. Matthew 8:12; 22:13; 25:30.

Footnotes:

1. It appears that a passage and reference have been omitted here. The form of the quotation within the square brackets is the same as in Apocalypse Explained 401[20].

Apocalypse Revealed (Whitehead translation 1928) 413

413. And the third part of the sun was smitten, and the third part of the moon, and the third part of the stars, so that the third part of them was darkened, signifies that by reason of evils from falsities and of falsities from evils, they did not know what love is, or what faith is, or any truth. By "the third part" is signified all, (400); by "the sun" is signified love, (53); by "the moon" is signified intelligence and faith, (332); by "stars" are signified the knowledges of truth and good from the Word, (51); by "being darkened" is signified not to be seen or known by reason of evils from falsities and falsities from evils. Evils from falsities are with those who assume the falsities of religion, and confirm them till they appear as truths, and when they live according to them they do evils from falsities, or the evils of falsity. But those have falsities from evils, who do not regard evils as sins; and still more those who, by reasonings from the natural man, and more still from the Word, confirm with themselves that evils are not sins. The confirmations themselves are falsities from evils, and are called the falsities of evil.

[2] The reason that "darkness" signifies this is because light signifies truth; and when the light is extinguished, there comes darkness. In confirmation the passages will first be adduced, where similar things to those here in Revelation are said of "the sun, the moon, and the stars," and of "the darkness" arising from the extinction of them:

The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and terrible day of Jehovah cometh, (Joel 2:31).

The stars of the heavens and their constellations shall not shine with their light; the sun shall be darkened in his rising; and the moon shall not make her light to shine, (Isaiah 13:10; 24:23).

When I shall extinguish thee, I will cover the heavens; I will cover the sun with a cloud, and the moon shall not make her light to shine; all the luminaries of light in the heavens will I make black over thee, and I will set darkness upon thy land, (Ezekiel 32:7-8).

The day of Jehovah is near; the sun and the moon are blackened, and the stars shall withdraw their brightness, (Joel 2:10).

Immediately after the affliction of those days the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, (Matthew 24:29; Mark 13:24-25).

Who, that elevates his mind, cannot see that the sun, the moon, and the stars of the world are not meant in these cases?

[3] That falsities of various kinds are signified by "darkness," is evident from these passages:

Woe to them that desire the day of Jehovah; it is a day of darkness and not of light: is not the day of Jehovah darkness, and not light, thick darkness, and not brightness? (Amos 5:18, 20).

The day of Jehovah is a day of darkness and thick darkness, a day of cloud and of cloudiness, (Zephaniah 1:15).

In that day He shall look down upon the earth, which, behold, is darkness; and the light shall grow dark in its ruins, (Isaiah 5:30; 8:22).

Behold, darkness covereth the earth, and thick darkness the peoples, (Isaiah 60:2).

Give glory to Jehovah, before He cause darkness: we wait for light, but He maketh it thick darkness, (Jeremiah 13:16).

We wait for light, but behold darkness, and not brightness; we walk in thick darkness; we stumble at noon as in the twilight, as if dead among the living, (Isaiah 59:9-10).

Woe to them that put darkness for light, and light for darkness, (Isaiah 5:20).

The people walking in darkness see a great light, (Isaiah 9:2; Matthew 4:16).

The dayspring from on high hath appeared to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, (Luke 1:78-79).

If thou give thy soul to the hungry, then shall thy light rise in the darkness, and thy thick darkness shall be as the noonday, (Isaiah 58:10).

In that day the eyes of the blind, who are in thick darkness and darkness, shall see, (Isaiah 29:18; 42:16; 49:9).

Jesus said, I am the light of the world; he that followeth Me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life, (John 8:12).

Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness seize upon you: I am come a light into the world, that everyone that believeth in Me should not abide in darkness, (John 12:35, 46).

When I sit in darkness Jehovah is a light unto me, (Micah 7:8).

This is the judgment, that light hath come into the world; but men loved the darkness more than the light, (John 3:19; 1:4-5).

If the light [lumen] that is in thee be darkness, how great is the darkness, (Luke 11:34-36).

This is your hour, and the power of darkness, (Luke 22:53).

By "darkness" in these places is signified falsity arising either from ignorance of the truth, or from a false principle of religion, or from a life of evil. Concerning those who are in the falsities of religion and thence in evils of life, the Lord says that they shall be cast into outer darkness, (Matthew 8:12; 22:13; 25:30).

"Sol vertetur in tenebras, et Luna in sanguinem, antequam venit dies Jehovae magnus et terribilis," (Joel 3:4 (B.A. 2:31));

"Stellae caelorum et Sidera illorum non lucebunt luce sua, obtenebrabitur Sol in ortu suo, et Luna non splendere faciet lumen suum," (Esaias 13:10; tum videatur 24:23); 1

"Obtegam cum exstinxero te Caelos, Solem nube obtegam, et Luna non lucere faciet lucem suam, omnia Luminaria, lucis in Caelis atrabo super te, et dabo Tenebras super terra tua," (Ezechiel 32:7-8);

Propinquus est dies Jehovae; "Sol et Luna atrati sunt, et Stellae contrahent Splendorem Suum," (Joel 2:10);

"Statim post afflictionem dierum illorum, Sol obscurabitur, et Luna non dabit lumen suum, et Stellae cadent de Caelo," (Matthaeus 24:29; Marcus 13:24-25).

Quis, qui elevat mentem, non videre potest, quod in his locis non sol, luna et stellae mundi intelligantur. Quod per "tenebras" significentur falsa varii generis, constat ex his:

"Vae desiderantibus diem Jehovae, ille tenebrarum et non Lucis; nonne Tenebrae dies Jehovae et non Lux, Caligo et non splendor," (Amos 5:18, 20);

Dies Jehovae "dies Tenebrarum et Caliginis, dies nubis et obnubilationis," (Zephanias 1:15);

"In die illo despiciet in Terram, quae ecce Tenebrae, et Lux Obtenebrescet in ruinis suis," (Esaias 5:30; 8:22);

"Ecce Tenebrae obtegunt terram, et Caligo populos," (Esaias 60:2);

"Date Jehovae gloriam, antequam Tenebras inducat: exspectamus Lucem, sed ponit illam in Caliginem," (Jeremias 13:16); 2

"Exspectamus Lucem, sed ecce Tenebrae, et non Splendores, in Caliginibus ambulamus; offendimus in meridie sicut in crepusculo, inter vivos sicut mortui," (Esaias 59:9-10);

"Vae ponentibus Tenebras in Lucem, et Lucem in Tenebras," (Esaias 5:20);

"Populus ambulans in Tenebris, vidit Lucem magnam," (Esaias 9:1 (B.A. 2); Matthaeus 4:16); 3

"Ortus ab alto apparuit illis qui in Tenebris et in umbra mortis sedent," (Luca 1:78-79); 4

"Si des famelico animam tuam, exorietur in Tenebris Lux tua, et Caligo tua sicut meridies," (Esaias 58:10);

"In die illo oculi caecorum, qui in Caligine et Tenebris, videbunt," (Esaias 29:18; 42:16; 49:9); Jesus dixit, "Ego sum Lux mundi: qui Me sequitur non ambulabit in Tenebris, sed habebit Lucem vitae," (Johannes 8:12);

Ambulate quousque Lucem habetis, ne Tenebrae vos apprehendant: Ego Lux in mundum veni, ut omnis qui credit in Me, in Tenebris non maneat," (Johannes 12:35, 46);

"Quando sedeo in Tenebris, Jehovah, Lux mihi," (Micham 7:8);

"Hoc est judicium, quod Lux venerit in mundum, sed dilexerunt homines magis Tenebras quam Lucem," (Johannes 3:19; 1:4-5);

"Si lumen quod in te Tenebrae sunt, Tenebrae quantae," ((Matthaeus 6:23); Luca 11:34-36);

"Haec est vestra hora, et potestas Tenebrarum," (Luca 22:53);
