Apocalypse Revealed (Rogers translation 2007) 511

511. And great fear fell on those who saw them. This symbolizes a disturbance of the mind and alarm at Divine truths.

The symbolic meaning of fear varies, depending on what it affects. Here it symbolizes a disturbance of the mind and alarm at Divine truths, as Divine truths have this effect on evil people. For evil people are terrified as soon as they hear about hell and eternal damnation. But the terror soon dissipates, along with their belief in the existence of any life after death.

Apocalypse Revealed (Coulson translation 1970) 511

511. 'And great fear fell upon those seeing them' signifies disturbance of mind and alarm at Divine Truths. 'Fear' signifies various things in accordance with the thing that affects. Here 'great fear' signifies disturbance of mind and alarm at Divine truths; for Divine truths have those effects among the evil, for they frighten them when at the same time there is heard hell and eternal damnation; but that terror is soon dissipated, together with the faith that there is any life after death.

Apocalypse Revealed (Whitehead translation 1928) 511

511. And great fear fell upon them that saw them, signifies commotion of mind and consternation at Divine truths. "Fear" has various significations according to the thing which causes it; here "great fear" signifies commotion of mind, and consternation at Divine truths; for Divine truths have these effects with the evil, for they terrify them when at the same time they hear of hell and eternal damnation; but that terror soon vanishes, together with the faith that there is any life after death.
