Apocalypse Revealed (Rogers translation 2007) 527

527. "And those who fear Your name, small and great." This symbolizes people who love things having to do with the Lord, in a lesser or greater degree.

To fear the Lord's name means, symbolically, to love things having to do with the Lord. To fear means, symbolically, to love, and the Lord's name symbolizes everything by which He is worshiped (no. 81). People small and great symbolize people who fear the Lord in a lesser or greater degree.

To fear here means, symbolically, to love because everyone who loves another is afraid of injuring the one he loves. There is no genuine love without that fear. Accordingly, someone who loves the Lord is afraid of doing evil, because evils go counter to the Lord, as they go counter to His Divine laws in the Word - the Word that originates from the Lord and thus embodies Him. Indeed, they go counter to His Divine essence, which is to will the salvation of all. For He is a savior. But He cannot save a person unless the person lives in accordance with the Lord's laws and commandments. What is more, someone who loves evils also desires to injure the Lord, indeed to crucify Him. This desire is inmostly present in every evil, even in people who in the world acknowledge Him with the lips. The reality of this is something unknown to people, but well known to angels.

[2] That to fear God means, symbolically, to love things having to do with God, by doing them and refusing to do things which go counter to Him, is apparent from the following passages:

...what does Jehovah your God require of you, but to fear Jehovah your God, to walk in all His ways and to love Him... (Deuteronomy 10:12)

You shall walk after Jehovah your God and fear Him, that you may keep His commandments... (Deuteronomy 13:4)

You shall fear Jehovah your God; you shall serve Him, and to Him you shall hold fast... (Deuteronomy 10:20. Cf. 6:2, 6:13-14, 6:24; 8:6; 17:19; 28:58; 31:12)

Who will grant them to have a heart to fear Me and keep... My commandments... (Deuteronomy 5:29)

Teach me Your way, O Jehovah...; unite my heart to a fear of Your name. (Psalms 86:11)

Blessed is he who fears Jehovah, who walks in His ways. (Psalms 128:1, cf. 112:1, Jeremiah 44:10)

If I am a Father, where is My honor? If I am Lord, where is the fear of Me? (Malachi 1:6, cf. 2:5, Isaiah 11:2-3)

I will give them one heart, and one way, to fear Me... and I will put fear of Me in their hearts so that they do not turn away from Me. (Jeremiah 32:39-40)

The beginning of wisdom is fear of Jehovah... (Psalms 111:10)

And so on elsewhere, as in Isaiah 8:13; 25:3; 29:13; 50:10; Jeremiah 33:9; Psalms 22:23; 33:8, 18; 34:7, 9; 55:19; 115:11, 13; 147:11; Revelation 14:7; Luke 1:50.

A fear of God in evil people, on the other hand, is not love, but a fear of hell.

Apocalypse Revealed (Coulson translation 1970) 527

527. 'And to those fearing Thy Name, the small and the great' signifies who love the things that are the Lord's in a lesser or a greater degree. By 'to fear the Lord's Name' is signified to love the things that are the Lord's. By 'to fear' is signified to love, and by 'the Lord's Name' are signified all the things by means of which He is worshipped (81). By 'the small and the great' are signified those who fear the Lord in a lesser or greater degree. 'To fear' here signifies to love, because everyone who loves also fears to do evil to him whom he loves. A genuine love is not given without that fear. Accordingly he who loves the Lord fears to do evil things because evil things are against Him, for they are against His Divine laws in the Word, which is from Himself, thus is Himself. In fact they are against His Divine Essence, which is that He wills to save all, for He is the Saviour, and He cannot save a man unless he lives in accordance with His laws and precepts. And, what is more, he who loves evils also loves to do evil to the Lord, even to crucify Him. This lies inmostly hidden in every evil, even with those who in the world make oral confession of Him. That this is the case is unknown to men but is very well known to angels.

[2] That 'to fear God' signifies to love the things that are of God by doing them, and not willing to do those that are against Him, is plain from these passages:

What does Jehovah God seek from thee, except that thou shouldest fear Jehovah thy God, to go in all His ways, and to love Him? Deuteronomy 10:12.

You shall go after Jehovah your God, and Him shall you fear, that you may keep His precepts. Deuteronomy 13:4; [H.B. 5].

Thou shalt fear Jehovah thy God, Him shalt thou serve, and shalt cleave to Him. Deuteronomy 10:20; 6:2, 13-14, 24; 8:6; 17:19; 28:58; 31:12.

Who shall grant that they may have a heart for fearing Me, and for keeping My precepts? Deuteronomy 5:29; [H.B. 26].

Teach me Thy way, O Jehovah, unite my heart to the fear of Thy Name. Psalms 86:11.

Blessed is he fearing Jehovah, who walks in His ways. Psalms 128:1; 112:1; Jeremiah 44:10.

If I am the Father, where is My honour? If I am the Lord, where is the fear of me? Colossians 1:[6]; 2:5; Isaiah 11:2-3.

I will give them one heart, and one way to fear Me, and I will give My fear in their heart, that they may not go back from with Me (ab apud Me). Jeremiah 32:39-40.

The beginning of wisdom is the fear of Jehovah. Psalms 111:10.

Besides elsewhere, as Isaiah 8:13; 25:3; 29:13; 50:10; Jeremiah 33:9; Psalms 22:23; [H.B. 24]; 33:8, 18; 34:7, 9 [H.B. 8, 10]; Psalms 55:19 [H.B. 20]; 115:10-11; 147:11; Revelation 14:7; Luke 1:50. But the fear of God in the case of the evil is not love but a fear of hell.

Apocalypse Revealed (Whitehead translation 1928) 527

527. And to them that fear Thy name, the small and the great, signifies who love the things which are of the Lord in a lesser and in a greater degree. By "fearing the name of the Lord" is signified to love the things which are of the Lord; "to fear" signifies to love, and "the name of the Lord" signifies all things by which He is worshiped, (81); by "the small and the great" are signified they who fear the Lord in a lesser and a greater degree. The reason why "to fear" here signifies to love is because everyone who loves also fears to do evil to him whom he loves. Genuine love is not given without that fear. Therefore he who loves the Lord fears to do evils, because evils are contrary to Him, being contrary to His Divine laws in the Word, which are from Him and thus are Himself; yea, they are contrary to His Divine essence, which is that He wills to save all, for He is the Savior, and cannot save man unless man lives according to His laws and commandments. And, what is more, he who loves evils also loves to do evil to the Lord, yea to crucify Him. This lies inmostly hid in all evil, even among those who confess Him with their lips in the world. That it is so is unknown to men, but it is well known to the angels.

[2] That "to fear God" signifies to love the things which are of God, by doing them, and by not willing to do those which are against Him, appears from these passages:

What doth Jehovah God require of thee, but to fear Jehovah thy God, to walk in all His ways, and to love Him, (Deuteronomy 10:12, 20).

Ye shall walk after Jehovah your God, and fear Him, and keep His commandments, (Deuteronomy 13:4).

Thou shalt fear Jehovah thy God, Him shall thou serve, and to Him shalt thou cleave, (Deuteronomy 10:20; 6:2, 13, 24; 8:6; 17:19; 28:58; 31:12).

Who shall grant that there may be a heart in them, to fear Me, and to keep My commandments, (Deuteronomy 5:29).

Teach me Thy way, O Jehovah, unite my heart to the fear of Thy name, (Psalms 86:11).

Happy is he that feareth Jehovah; that walketh in His ways, (Psalms 128:1; 112:1; Jeremiah 44:10).

If I am the Father, where is My honor? and if I am the Lord, where is My fear? (Malachi 1:6; 2:5; Isaiah 11:2-3.

I will give them one heart and one way to fear Me, and I will put My fear in their heart, that they depart not from Me, (Jeremiah 32:39-40).

The fear of Jehovah is the beginning of wisdom, (Psalms 111:10).

Besides other places; as in Isaiah 8:13; 25:3; 29:13; 50:10; Jeremiah 33:9; Psalms 22:23; 33:8, 18; 34:7, 9; 55:19; 115:11, 13; 147:11; Rev 14:7; Luke 1:50. But the fear of God with the evil is not love, but the fear of hell.

"Post Jehovam Deum vestrum ibitis, Ipsumque timebitis, ut praecepti Ipsius custodiatis," (Deuteronomius 13:5 (B.A. 4));

"Jehovam Deum tuum timebis, Ipsi servies, Ipsique adhaerebis," (Deuteronomius 1:20; 6:2, 13, 24; 38:6; 17:19; 28:58; 31:12);

"Quis dabit ut sit cor illis ad Timendum Me, et ad custodiendum praecepta Mea," (Deuteronomius 5:26 (B.A. 29));

"Doce me Jehovah viam Tuam, aduna cor meum Timori Nominis Tui," (Psalm 86:11);

"Beatus Timens Jehovae, qui ambulat in viis Ipsius," (Psalm 128:1; Psalm 112:1; Jeremias 44:10); 4

"Si Pater Ego, ubi honor Meus; si Dominus Ego, ubi Timor Mei," (Malachias 1:6; 2:5; Esaias 11:2-3);

"Dabo illis cor unum, et viam unam ad Timendum Me, et Timorem Mei dabo in cor eorum, ut non recedant ab apud Me," (Jeremias 32:39-40);

"Principium sapientiae Timor Jehovae," (Psalm 111:10).

(Praeter alibi, ut Esaias 8:13; 25:3; 529:13; 50:10; Jeremias 31:9; Psalm 22:24 (B.A. 23); Psalm 33:8, 18; 6Psalm 35:8, 10 (B.A. 7, 9); Psalm 55:20 (B.A. 19); Psalm 115:11, 13; 7Psalm 147:11; Apocalypsis 14:7; Luca 1:50).

Timor Dei autem apud malos non est amor, sed timor pro Inferno.
